Japanese Maples rarely survive in Baton Rouge. The heat and humidity of summer chokes them. Beautiful trees though.

There is a newer variety called Emperor I that I’ve had outstanding luck with growing in full sun across the bay in Mobile. I think the weather is as hot or hotter in the Mobile area than it is in Baton Rouge. That and the wind blows a lot. The Emperor I stays a reddish maroon color all season for the most part and looks a lot better than my neighbors Bloodgood. I think those Bloodgoods like a fair amount of shade. It also puts on a great show in the fall because the leaves turn bright red similar to a red leaf maple up north. You just have to water them real good until they get their roots established. Mine is on year 3 in the yard and I bet it’s close to 10’ tall.
