You can also put Pete Moss down on Bermuda, right before dormancy. Not sure about St Augustine or Centipede.

Just mow it. Let the stolons keep running to expand it.

Reseed lawns in spring. I wait til the soil holds at least 70°. Whichever pre-emergent you use will have specific reseeding instructions.

I am moving into a new house at the end of the month. I would rather not have to do a ton of work to get the yard looking decent. Without knowing what trash grass is in the yard now, what are some small things I can do to set myself up for a healthy yard? There's a big dead spot in the front from recent construction debris. I'm not going to be pulling up what's there and tilling or anything this year so I guess I'm really looking for suggestions on how to get a decent yard. I'm an absolute newbie to this.

Are there any other sites that have more information I can look at?

Use a broadleaf killer like Trimec (WeedFreeZone by Fertilome is readily found) or MSM to knock back a lot of the weeds now. A good pre-emergent before Thanksgiving will get you a head start in the spring, then another round or two of WeedFreeZone early in the spring. By then, you should be down to mainly grass and grassy weeds. Come back with some pics then and we can start some pinpoint spot-spraying.

You can get a nice winter yard for this year by overseeding with rye (use a turf rye, NOT Gulf annual rye). Just do it before you put down your pre-emergent.

im going to have to get you pics of the 3-4 different types of grasses in my yard.

BTW the green kyllinga and other weeds all died when i sprayed Sulfentrazone (Dismiss). took a few days to brown but it did. Did my neighbors yard and only got halfway done before it got dark and you can see the line where i stopped.

I'm a big fan of Dismiss for sedges. Certainty works well too, but Dismiss nukes that shite.

Not to sound stupid...

but how safe are the full range of chemicals you suggest if we are on a well?

Can you list the use of any chemicals you would not use if on a well?(if any)

Thanks

The only time I've ever heard of pesticides reaching groundwater was years back in Florida. Large number of golf courses, a shallow water table, and over-applying MSMA to the courses turned up traces in the well water. That's why MSMA was pulled from the turf market for a while, and may still be illegal in Florida.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'm finally able to get around to starting this project. I didn't want to start until I was ready to do it.

Couple questions:

Which Rye seeds would you recommend for this winter?

Once those are down, how long should I wait to put down a pre-emergent?

And what should I know about my yard for a year round grass for next year? (Or is rye suitable for my yard year round?)

Make sure to get a turf rye, it stays shirt and doesn't hold as much moisture. Once the rye has germinated and you can see it growing, it is usually safe to apply pre-emergent (read the label of the one you're using to be sure). Rye grass is an annual, cool-season grass. Not suitable for your summer lawn. I suggest Centipede- "the lazy man's grass".
