I think I’m almost at that point in my life where I feel the same. I saw some good deer the last few hunts but never slung an arrow or pull the trigger.

I very much enjoy watching them. I’ve been blessed to hunt the area I’ve hunted since a kid. My brothers and my dad have killed some really big deer up here. I get much more excited when a nephew or a friend of mine or my brothers get the opportunity to take a trophy buck.

If I had to pay to hunt the area I’m hunting, I wouldn’t. The rates some of these guys pay around us to hunt is staggering. I truly am blessed my father and grandfather held onto this property. Hunting and fishing is therapy for me and time I like to spend with God and shutoff the outside world. Beautiful this morning.

Oh, I’ve watched a good bit of deer the last 40 minutes heading to bed down. They definitely fed all night under that moon. Should be awesome this evening.

Pretty damn good. Not as good as the 200gr Hornady SPs though. I should’ve stuck with that bullet. My gun actually likes them. I know a lot on here hate Hornady but the groupings I was shooting at 200 yards were just as good as my .308. No bullshite. Barnes 180gr shoot a tight group out of my gun but not as tight as the 200sp.

The only reason I changed was because I always like shooting a lighter grain out of the different calibers I have.

I want to see how this Barnes does when it hits a deer though

Was thinking about purchasing a .35 Whelen. Any model or brand rifle I should stick to?

Get you just a CVA Scout V2. You can get for probably $350ish. 25” SS barrel. If you do buy one be sure you buy your own 1 piece scope mount base and whatever rings you like.

Actually just save yourself the head ache and buy DNZ game reaper mounts.

The .35 Whelen is an excellent caliber. There’s nothing “primitive “ or black powder “ about it. It’s basically a necked up 30-06. I know people who hunt with all season. From primitive all the way through the end of season.

Thanks

Looked at the mounts online, what height and what scope / size do you recommend?

Regarding what scope, it depends on your budget.

I have a Zeiss Conquest V4 3x12x44 which runs about $900. The only reason I have that scope is because it came off of my 7 mag when I upgraded to a new scope. If I would’ve had to buy a scope for my .35 I wouldn’t have spent that much money.

A lot of people on this board thumb their nose at folks who spend less than $900 on a scope but there is nothing wrong with some of the Nikons and Vortex that run $200-300. They will get the job done.

Me personally, I love Zeiss glass. I’ve hunted with Zeiss scopes on my guns the last 11 years. Before that I hunted Leupold which is also a top scope. Love them both. It all depends on your budget though.
