I shoot $200 leupolds because that's what I could afford when I bought my rifles. I have hunted with the cheapest of the cheap back in the day though.

I am a huge proponent of the saying "spend more on the scope and hardware than the rifle" though. A rifle that shoots 2 MOA will kill a deer a good ways away, assuming you can see him good enough to put the hairs where they need to be.

I just can't afford expensive optics. If I buy an expensive scope, it will be an expensive leupold. It's what I grew up with, so I'm staying with it.

Yes, Monarchs are good scopes. I have one on my .308 (TC Venture).
Shifted it from my .270wsm when I got the z5.

That Monarch never let me down. The only thing that I noticed (doesn't bother me) is that you can see one of the internal screws when you look through them. A big positive, is that the eye relief is incredible.

That's classic! Exactly right. Better off if you don't know what you're missing.

AND I'm serious about Sightron scopes. Do some research before you buy anything else.
And, OF COURSE, go swarovski if you can fork the $$.

I've only ever hunted with the Simmons scopes that came on our guns (package deal). My dad's buckmaster is probably the nicest scope on a rifle I've shot, although I did use a browning BAR .270 with a leupold on it for a season. The scope pulled in more light but other than that didnt make much difference to me. Hated the gun because it was so damn heavy. I'm gonna put a new scope on my savage eventually but I don't plan on spending more than $200, maybe $300 max if I have extra cash to burn. I'll never make a shot longer than 200 yards where I hunt, so I can't bring myself to blow more on the scope than the gun cost.

Fwiw the Monarchs are nice. I also looked through a couple Swavorskis when my dad was looking for a scope for his gun, I erased that memory from my mind, I don't wanna know what I'm missing

My dad had read a bunch about these before he got his gun, and heavily considered getting one but he got a ridiculous deal on the buckmaster at BPS

Good move. I still remember looking through a top of the line swarvoski on a remington 700 sendero at dusk

One thing that sets a high end scope apart is how much better you can see late through the scope than you can with your naked eye. A cheap scope looks like it's darker outside than your naked eye. A high-end scope will extend your hunt by a 10 minutes.

Is it worth the extra 2K bones? I don't think so. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder though.

I was going to look into a new scope this summer, but I have too much other shite I'd rather buy first. Looks like I'm gonna give the Simmons another season or two.

Interesting thing about it is that it came mounted and bore sighted on the gun when I bought it as a package deal. It was dead on at 100 yards out the box, and in 6 years I've never had to adjust it once. It's enough to make me not want to take it off

Look at a leupold rifleman and see if you like it. They run a count hair over $200. Best scope I have ever hunted with that is under $350.

Just remember, you can never downgrade on scopes. You won't allow yourself to.

As long as the reticle matches the turrets and the scope truly moves what I input in to the turrets. I dont really care what brand it is.

They finally released some scopes that actually have reticles that match the adjustments, they do make some nice stuff.

you saying anything better than a Leupold isnt worth it?

No I'm saying exactly what I said, It would be lost one me. Honestly anything past a Vari X III is lost on me. I can see to shoot with that thing well past legal shooting light. I killed a bobcat with it this year that my buddy couldn't even see anymore with the naked eye while it was moving at a hundred yards.

I've shot the swarovskis and they're freaking awesome. But they aren't three or four times the price awesome by any stretch of the imagination.

Best spotting scope I ever used was a Swarovski btw. But it was the price of a new four wheeler. The difference in it and one that was a fifth the price was not worth the difference. Not even close.

I own a bunch of scopes - Swaro´s, Zeiss, Leupold, Redfield, Nikon, Simmons, Tasco, Burris. The more expensive scopes (Swaro and Zeiss) are very clear and dependable, but so are the Leupolds, Nikons and Burris. Even the Simmons and Tascos will do the job if you at least get their mid range or better models. It all depends on what you want. As someone pointed out, you will probably not kill any more deer with a custom $4000 rifle and $2000 scope than you would with a plane Jane Savage with a Simmons. Some guys got to have the best of everything, some guys take delight in making a simple setup work for them.

In the US, with most states laws stating that hunting must be done between sunup and sundown, any of the scopes will work just fine. What the Big Objective, High dollar scopes were originally designed for in Europe were night hunting for pigs. At night, the big lenses and better glass make a real difference. In Daylight, not so.

FWIW, I think the best value in scopes comes from the Leupolds, Nikons, Burris, and Redfields. All are reasonably priced, very rugged and dependable, and will serve you quite well.

But to answer the OP´s original question - there is not a truly better scope than the Swaro Z6 if you are willing to spend the money.

I understand good scopes, I do. BUT
I have a Simmons 44 mag on my Rem 700 30.06 that I put on it back in 1994. This combo I have is deadly. I hit a quarter at 100 yds. My shot groups are tight. I have hit deer running, low light, and at close to 200 yds all dropped in place. It works, Period. I would like to replace it with a nicer scope. Only because the view is crisper, not better. But I will not replace what is not broken.

Crawdaddy,

that is exactly what I was trying to say. It does not have to be expensive to do the job.

Two years ago I bought a Swarovski scope with the ballistic turret. I highly recommend it. It allows me to make a 300-400 yard shots with confidence. Sure comparing a Nikon, Lepold and Swarovski at the store one will not see a huge difference between the three of them but dusk and dawn is where the Swarovski shines. Remember the lower the power setting the better you can see at dusk.

Many on this board say the cost is not worth it but that is because they haven't looked thru one right at dark. Don't forget the binoculars they are probably just as important as the scope. In my opinion Swarovski makes the best scope and Lecia makes the best binoculars
