This video showed me something I had never realized before - using a rifled shotgun barrel and standard loads will cause a very large pattern. I guess it makes sense since the gases will be swirling as they leave the barrel and will throw shot everywhere.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnpjrRvFTLw&feature=plcp

This also explains why the Judge is great for keeping in your car but not ideal for home defense when using shot shells. If your target is at close range, the results will be good. But if not, the pattern will be gargantuan.

I start out with 2 slugs, then 2 buckshot rounds and finish with 2 birdshot rounds.

And FWIW, the Iraqveteran8888 channel is pretty good.

I don't shoot bird shot out of mine. 000 buck shoots good out of a judge inside of 25 yards.

I didn't realize a Judge had a 6 round cylinder...

You may want to test that. Do you see the spread they got at 10 yards using 00 buck? If those giant BBs spread that much at 10 yards, I imagine larger ones at a greater distance would still spread a lot. I don't trust a defense load until I test it, no matter what it is.

Just a suggestion...

I have. At 25 yards 000 buck (4 pellets) hit a feed sack inside the area the size of a paper plate/torso.

I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but mine has the 6.5 inch barrel.

Has alot to do with it. I was about to call bullshite, because i had the shorter barrel and it wouldst pattern well outside of 10 yards. I sold it.

Got a saiga. 12

Also, you are taking what they are saying and showing about a mossberg 835 and applying it to a pistol.

That's like saying open face reels don't throw far as you chunk a bait with a abu garcia 6500, then coming here and starting a thread saying, "Watch this video Revo owners beware".

You're funny.

The fact remains the Judge will not hold a pattern when shooting any scatter round. It has too much recoil to be very accurate with an 45LC. Yours has a long barrel, making it more accurate, but it is also the size of a sawed off.

I agree, and I may have been stretching the 25 yard claim when it was closer to 15 yards.

It's a big gun to begin with, why not go all out?

That was my justification...

Don't get me wrong, its a sweet looking gun. Its not for everyone, but if i got another one, id go with the long barrel strictly for functionality.

Never heard of them... but here is the Govenor with a 6 round cylinder.

That looks kinda like the detective version of an old S&W .38 snub nose that had a 6 round cylinder where as the ones sold to the public had 5 shot cylinders.

This is true, but the fact remains that no matter how long your barrel is, it still isn't smoothbore, whether it's a full sized 12 gauge or a handheld 410.

But, if your defense load works for you, then you should be just fine. I feel more comfortable with my 18" 870 with 00 buck than I ever would with a handheld 410 though.

And I didn't realize the Governor had a 6 port cylinder. I bet the action is a lot smoother too. If there's one thing Smith can do, they sure can build a damn fine revolver. I will definitely have a 686 in my collection down the road.

My first 3 are .45's... the buckshot is more of a novelty in case the home invader is interested or wants to argue about patterning.

Haha, well that kind of entirely changes the game...
