Not sure if this is the correct board, but I am trying to replace my rotten back door. Previous homeowners did not have a patio cover, so all of the wood in the door frame has rotted and the door barely can open. I was going to install a new door, but I am unsure of how to do the transom. I can get the new transom made at home depot, but not sure if I just attach it to the frame. The door I have is below. I would appreciate any advice from you fine gents.

The transom window is likely just screw or nailed into the framing. Unless the framing on it is rotted (and it sounds like everything is) you May can reuse the framed window.

You may also be able to reframe it yourself if it is still sealed (double pane window).

all those doors leak, they arent meant to be installed without another storm door or shelter covering them to keep direct rain off of them.

i fought one for a year even filled the entire void around window to keep water out but it didnt stay sealed for long before leaking again.

put a solid door in its place and prime and paint the bottom of the door frame and any other exposed raw wood before installing it. not doing this is the number one reason they rot out so fast.

seeing as how its a nice completely exposed view of everything you might just do better to pay a professional so the end result looks professional as though it were never replaced. its not hard but getting nice clean cuts on all that molding can be tricky

its a 2 person job for sure and leave the door in the frame when installing, it helps keep everything square.

install hinge side first and double check all gaps before screwing in place while you use a level, then shim as needed for the latch side

the transom is most likely made as separate from the door so you need to pull off the moldings and confirm this. even if its made all in one you can use a reciprocating saw to cut it off from the door molding and then proceed with a standard door install

Get a fiberglass door with a PVC or composite frame and trim. If you can get away with it (it's really personal preference) go with an outswing unit instead of an inswing. The threshold setup on an outswing unit adds an extra layer of defense in water leaking in. With an outswing fiberglass door with PVC frame you can literally spray it down with a hose to wash it and won't have to worry about water getting inside or causing any damage to the door. Stay away from home depot for it. Call a local shop and save some money and get exactly what you need. I would recommend Trimco millwork.

I had the same thought this was about a boat and had to click on the thread to see what kind of livingston parish engineering it would talk to make a boat transom from a door frame. I was disappointed this was about doors and windows.
