3000 is a big budget for that set up

not at all. a quality thermal optic will eat up that budget alone

Anyone around the Baton Rouge area that would be a good resource to go talk to?

Bowie Outfitters
Interstate Guns

anything less than $3k for NV pretty much sucks
anything less than $5k for thermal pretty much sucks

some exceptions to the rule, but thats a good benchmark

Not really. I paid less than $600 for my ATN. The ATN is far from flawless, but it works and records. Besides, I only want to shoot 1 or 2 hogs and that's it. I'll put the rifle and scope away til next year.

I hope Bleeding Purple comes in with his sage wisdom on this topic - in most cases where you have an infestation bad enough for you to say something like this, it's too late to "hunt" them. You can, for meat, for sport and just for the positive vibe you'll get from killing them in this fashion - but you won't really control the population. You'll have to do a comprehensive abatement program, primarily oriented around trapping. It will require checking the traps regularly - and you have to kill every single one of them, including (especially?) the cute little shoats and piglets.

Mercy is not your friend when eradicating hogs. If you leave 10% of them, for example, the population will rebound in just 2 or 3 years.

They're that fecund and adaptable. And the ones you don't kill will breed smarter, harder to kill hogs for the next generation.

Why Quiet? Is that just money spent that is not needed?

hogs will scatter at the sound of the report (gunshot). Silencers allow you to get off more shots before they scatter since hogs can't decipher where shots are coming from. The sound of bullet impact is usually louder than the report.

Yes, thermals are expensive, but night vision scopes are not.
