Teal hunt
Maurepas swamp wma
73 degrees, partly cloudy with 3 mph south wind
Beretta A400, light modified with #3 steel
DR-85 duck call
Kayak hunt with 6 BWT decoys. Seen a boatload of wood ducks but zero teal so far. Lots of Tupelo gum fruits floating, guessing that’s what Al the woodies are feeding on. Around 8am I’ll move further down and look around for a different spot and”burr, burr, burr on the call. Good luck to all out this morning.

Haven’t hunted maurepas in years. Have you had success on teal recently?
About 10 years ago we hunted it pretty regularly and had some really good teal seasons. Multiple boat limits almost every trip. That lasted for 2-3 years then the number of birds using the area and ability to access the area just continually got worse. That swamp needs a steady influx of fresh water. It’s so choked off from thick mat grass and salvinia type vegetation. In its 70’s and 80’s, it was some prime waterfowl habitat

Only woodies going back decades. December ‘96 was the last time I shot mallards (that was in the Blind River area). This morning I hunted in the King George Bay area where I normally hunt woodies during regular duck season and have yet to kill a teal here the last 3 Septembers.

We used to hunt in some ponds off the lake around Reserve. Not sure if they are even still visible or if they’ve all filled in. It was a long godevil run through the swamp from the canal. Couldn’t access from lakeshore unless you walked in with waders but there are some terrible deep holes and grass that you fall through in there.
I’ve hunted the “new” tract before but only from the hwy 16 access. Saw ducks while deer hunting and deer while duck hunting. We used to live off the Amite in French Settlement so it was a close to the house area to hunt.

I didn’t think you were allowed to drive back and access that boat launch?

Kayaked in through the Amite River under Hwy 16. I can hear the car’s passing where I set up.
