H&R handi rifle in .35 wheelen is your best bet. A .35 remington is also a very good caliber with less recoil and cheaper ammo, but your effective range is limited to about 200 yards.

The handi-rifles are some good high quality low cost rifles.

It's really impressive how accurate they are. I was not afraid of a 225-250 yard shot with my 444... Can't wait to shoot my new 35 Whelen. Got my scope mounts in today.

These guns travel far enough to need scopes? How are that called primitive then?

The inception date of the cartridge is what determines if it's primitive

Oh God yes. With a capable shooter and rifle the .35 whelen can be effective past 300 yards. Every one of them is effective beyond 100 yards.

The action of the handi-rifle was designed in the late 1800's. The calibers are definitely not primitive.

That's what I say, by they are considered primitive nonetheless. I use a CVA inline muzzleloader I got for $100 from cabelas. .50 cal. Iron sights. It does what I need it to do

any recomendations for a scope and mount for my CVA 35 whelen? Nothing to break the bank. For now I just have an ole Bushnell that will go on the ruger 10/22 after season

You think being primitive you couldn't use optics or anything. I have never hunted during this season but you would have thought you couldn't use optics since I really don't consider that "primitive"

Hell yeah. I'm putting a scope on my 35 Whelen that's almost as good as the Zeiss Conquest 3-12x56 on my rifle. I got a Trijicon 2.5-10x56 with the 30 mm tube for my 35... I figure if I'm going to use it almost a month out of the season, I might as well do it right.

It was that way up until not that long ago (mid 2000's I guess). Since then they have gotten very liberal with the word "primitive."

There are still old sidelock smoke poles out there if you want to go hard core old school.

If I was starting to hunt right now. All I would buy is a 35 Whelen primative rifle. No need for anything else in La

An H&R in .35 whelen is the only rifle you need all year in louisiana.
