Hypothetically? Is there a way to muffle or silence a 22 rifle?

I have seen a few threads about this in the past. I admittedly just dont know the physics behind the functioning of such a device. I am not sure why they supposedly work for some calibers and not others. And I am interested from a scientific standpoint in the consturction of a muffler.

In the movies they put a potato around the end of the barrel. Not sure if this helps

you can put a balloon around the barrel. works a little bit

Posessing a cylindrical tube that contains no less than 10 metal washers evenly spaced along the inside of the tube and welded in place, with a rubber o ring gasket that seals around the outside of the barrel is illegal. ;/

go to a good gun shop and have them make you one

Thread hijack. Did you ever unclog that overflow pipe in your lake?
Posted on 9/28/10 at 1:52 pm to CootKilla
no, and now it is too late to deal with prior to season being over.
I tried to find the end of pipe in the lake to no avail. I believe the lake finally filled in enough with sediment that the entire pipe including the intake are now under mud.
I tried to shove a push pipe through to the other end to dislodge the obstruction and allow even a small amount of flow which would then hopefully errode the remaining blockage away. I got 130 ft of 1/2 electrical conduit down the pipe until I hit the obstruction but could not dislodge it.
I will have to try again after season.
Did manage to get the 6 acres planted though and now need it to rain (but not too much) so my polt will come in and not wash away due to lake overflow.

Have you ever tried pumping water in from the outside the lake? Water can do some serious damage to clogs if used properly.

No but to pump water in would require a seal of a 14" pipe that could withstand some degree of pressure. Not to mention I would need 22,000 cubic inches or roughly 100 gallons of water to do this

I'm not talking about sealing off the pipe. Just hooking up a water pump to some pvc or even hose with a pinched piece of copper or something. Sort of like a pressure washer. That is what we use to jet down pilings for wharves. I know it is a long way to go, but would probably be cheaper than hiring a company to do it.

Just think muffler. All a silencer does is allow the gas to expand and not leave the barrel at super sonic speeds. They are merely mufflers for guns. You do sacrifice muzzle velocity and therefore range/energy when using a silencer.

I do not condone this not to mention you would be committing a felony but I have heard that if you wrap the end of your .22lr barrel with duct tape then thread on an oil filter it makes a very effective silencer for about 50 shots or so till the internals blow out.

Check out the 300 whisper.

Those small 8 ounce coke bottles and electric tape, but only good for one shot.

I had though about using a 2000 gpm sump pump with a 2" discharge pipe and tapering it down to a pressure washer tip on the end of the 130 ft long 1/2" pipe.
Might have to give this a try.

It might not happen right away, but I would be willing to bet it will happen. Just be sure to have your pump on the levee, so when the pipe unclogs it won't swamp your pump.

1st. For noise reduction you will need subsonic rounds to avoid the crack from the report.
2nd. MOST .22 cans are conical baffles. Some are stacked baffles but I think the Conical shaped baffles end to end (think Funnels with little holes drilled in them) works better.
3rd. First round is always going to "Pop" louder than the rest. Gasses heating up inside the can cause the can to get quieter. (I Don't remember why, but it does)
3rd- a) The first round pop can be reduced by Lithium grease (messy) and more commonly spit. This leads to the terms Wet and Dry Suppressors.
Older cans needed a lubricant of sorts to be optimized.
I think there might be one or two other guys that own/make them from what I can gather. I saw mine being made and know a little bit about the inner workings. I have seen and shot a bunch of suppressed guns. Different brands work better than others, integral is MUCH quieter on a .22 than a twist on can. I have one that you could shoot in your front yard and your neighbor likely wouldn't hear it.
