Do you need to take this course and get the card even if you’re hunting private land? Also, will this course be a bunch of kids or are there adults in there too?

You don’t need it to buy a hunting license. However if you want to hunt by yourself, then you need to.
If you hunt with someone else who has the full license, then you don’t need it.

I have a license and did not take the class. I was just curious. Is it a pain in the arse or is it actually helpful?

Yes, unless you’re hunting under supervision of someone who completed the course (within visual/audible range)

It was pretty even split in my class between adults and teenagers

I sat thru the class a couple years ago with my son and it was pretty informative. I can’t say that I learned any critical information, but it was fairly interesting.

Could I bring someone to sit through the class with me?

Unless something changed in the last 5-6 years, you can take most of it online but still have to go to a field day portion in person

The last class that I helped give with Honey Island was held at Sportsman's Warehouse in Slidell. There were about 30 people. Maybe 4 kids and the rest were young adults. Maybe 1 or 2 older folks.

Yes. You can take the test online and once you pass that you can sign up for a "range day" course which includes just a small portion of class time for mostly safety info then you do the shooting portion of test.

I'm pretty sure you can. I took my son to the one out past Walker and there was plenty of room. Most of the dads just sat in the back and drank coffee. The WLF guys were very nice and chatted it up with us during breaks and such.

But...you will still have to take the test again the morning of your field day...to ensure you were actually the person that tested in the online course.
