The guys at the top are on another level, and there are some that fish at the highest level that don't belong. There are also good many of them that have to make cuts just to get close to keeping their head above water. It's almost impossible to be successful if that's the game you're playing, those guys tend to wash out after a few years. The top 20 or 30 guys probably do pretty well but the rest struggle. More power to the ones that give it a shot, that's a damn hard way to make a living.

100% right on all accounts.

Seems like this thread is more about bass fishermen.

I'm a professional saltwater fisherman, I'll say this "its always better to be lucky than good".Equipment helps and has been a game changer in the last 20 years. That being said, I'm sure there are lots of rec fisherman as good as any professionals.

I think the shear amount of time you fish as a guide or pro gives a large adavantge(speaking saltwater). If I fished 300 days a year id get damn good too. Although obvisouly there are better fishermen than others. I'm not great

Time on the water is everything but what amazes me is tournament fishermen's ability to fish a new area and do well first time out without smashing into stumps. What impresses me even more is redfish tournament guys who burn ponds at 50mph that they have never fished before without destroying lower units on a regular basis. It seems like I hit something in the water once a year.
