My dad was a huge hunter but he passed away before i was old enough to go with him. I still have all his old rifles, some of which are older than i am.It's something that ive always wanted to get into but im not sure exactly what/where i need to be going and doing. Thoughts?

Do you have friends that hunt?

Are you married? Either way find a girl that has family that owns lots of land.

Learn as much as you can from books/here/YouTube then go to your local WMA and try to implement what you learned.
I grew up in it, so I really wouldn’t know. If you go to church, you could ask some of the congregation. I think there are some people on here that started hunting on their own, and they might have the correct answers.

You said you have his old rifles, do you shoot them? The reason I ask is that learning shooting proficiency and particularly shooting safety should be step number one to becoming a hunter. Then you start asking around about a place to hunt and before long you will either get an invitation to hunt, or maybe go the WMA route. Good hunting leases can be hard to find and expensive. It all depends on how serious you get about hunting and how big your budget is.

Stay far away from Hunting Shows. That shite ain't real. If it is woods hunting I suggest start spending lots of time in the woods. Every chance you get and in any season and weather. You need to get a feel for the woods and the wildlife. Go for a walk or hiking every chance you get. It may sound Granola/Hippy, but just sit in the woods and listen to what she says.
That's not going to happen watching some numbnuts on TV hawking his Camo and hunting gear sitting in a box blind 20 feet up in the air on a $10,000 lease.
Good Luck. Hunting is beautiful and a part of the Circle of Life. If I ever do not get somewhat emotional after killing a deer, I will give up hunting. Respect Nature with all it's beauty and cruelty.

For the most part I agree. However there are a few shows that he could learn a lot from. Search YouTube for The Hunting Public and The Hunting Beast. These guys hunt mainly public land and explain what and how they are doing everything. I've been hunting 25 years and still pick up tons of information from their channels.
Take what you learn and put a lot of time in walking in the woods and scouting/learning the areas. Come hunting season, put everything you learned to action.

Yes i live in B.R. I grew up shooting his guns so i kkow my way around a rifles and ive spent plenty of time in the woods. I lived on 12 acres in natchez at one point. I just never got into it so idk what i need or when to go, i know theres certain seasons and what not but do i need a license? Do i HAVE to take some kinda gun safety class?

Pretty sure every state requires a Hunter Safety Education class which you can probably do online. I’ve always thought the best way to get into hunting is by squirrel hunting (without a dog)

Meat Eater is not a bad show to watch if you want to learn. I enjoy Steve’s perspective on his show. I actually let my 4 yo watch with me, he loves it and learns a fair amount.

Honestly, revisit your understanding of the firearms. Get intimate with them.
If you have the means, I’d say go on a guided hunt in Texas (or wherever). Research them to find a highly rated one. You’ll glean some basics. It’s cheaper than going full steam into investing into hunting and can let you see if it really is for you. My father was a gun collector and a crazy avid hunter.....I’ve killed game. It’s not for me, granted bird hunting is fun. I’m all about fishing.

I am happy you are interested. I recommend small steps to see if you like it. You can accompany a licensed hunter without a Hunters Ed card or a license if you only observe in La. You can then find out what type of hunting you prefer. It may come as a surprise, but deer hunting is not the only thing you can do. You can do all or some of small game, waterfowl, or big game hunting. Contact the La Dept of Wildlife and Fisheries and ask if they have a program or info to get you started.

I can personally vouch for their methods making you successful with a bow quite quickly on public land

Let you see if going on guided s Texas 100% success deer SHOOTS is for you, not hunting will do nothing to see if hunting is for you or not. Could have opposite effect. I’ve done both, and if I was only exposed to that kind of hunt my whole life I don’t think I’d be a hunter. Don’t even get an adrenaline rush. It’s no work, cheap type a fun. Real hunting should be type b fun
