Sounds like a great trip if you can make it happen.

Thanks, If is the key word. I'm thinking Wednesday and Thursday we should have a good shot at our top choices for sites seeing as we are applying 3 months in advance. A little worried about Friday night though. I'm hoping someone on here has done something similar and can share some info.

Only thing I would say is that hike OUT of the canyon will not be fun. I did it in late march of 96 and was 21 years old and in awesome shape with perfect weather. Halfway up, one of my hiking buddies who was strong as a bear normally pretty much gave up. My 160 lb self had to carry his pack and my pack after an hour rest. That same day 2 guys the same age from ASU were in the same boat b/c the only food/drink they brought was mountain dew and a couple from Germany had great difficulty also.
My tips for the hike out are:
tons of water
tons of food
be sure no one smokes/quits now b/c you're screwed in June if they do- they'll slow you down and it will take all day. Seen this happen twice now, one in the GC and one in Philmont in NM. Dude went heat stroke on us in Philmont b/c of it.
EDIT: I just saw your board name- you're screwed

The board name was more of a joke during the Smoke Laval era.
I hear ya though. Last summer I did a day hike from Bright Angel to Plateau Point and coming out was tough to say the least. Pretty funny watching everyone running down/having fun then realizing they what themselves into on the way back. I was able (barely) to summit Mt. Rainer back in Sept and haven't let myself go too bad so it may suck but we all should be able to handle it.
But I def want to try and find an area close to the exit for Saturday morning. I'm placing a call to the back country station this afternoon when they open.

North Rim without a doubt. We did a group of 4 after graduating high school. The north rim was wooded, high altitude and pretty chilly (got into 30's) in august when we went. It's a 7 mile hike with a 4,000 ft drop to the campground then a 7 mile hike with a 1500 ft drop to the river.
We did a night up top in the woods, then headed down to halfway spent the night, hiked around the following day at the middle - went to the bottom, waterfalls, etc, another night at the middle, then back up top and hauled arse to Durango for a bed/shower in a hotel.
Back then we found the primitive camping office on the north rim did not answer the phone or email and we pretty much just showed up. They were very nice and helpful and gave us a permit no biggie.
When we asked why they did not answer calls the response was "do you know how many calls I'd have to answer? We would sell out of permits like crazy and then no one would show up. We prefer to give permits to people who show up here in person"
Doing it again I would stay up top in a hotel before the hike down and again once I got back up. And I would definitely hire a mule to pack my tent/bags/food down. We were cheap/broke as shite though so we just hauled our own stuff.

Phantom ranch. Is on the river at the bottom of the canyon. You can do day hikes and not pack squat but water down & back up. And then they'll feed you a good breakfast, give you a sack lunch, and steak or stew for dinner and beers. Not to mention a comfortable bed and hot shower.

I hiked down the south rim and rafted from Phantom Ranch to lake Mead. We started out at 5:30 am and didn't reach the river until about 11:30 or 12 and that was just going downhill (for the most part). The general rule of thumb is to allow 2-3x the amount of time it took you to go down to get back up. It's a fun trip, but remember to stay super hydrated and bring plenty of salty snacks...especially that time of year. I went in May and it was about 102 everyday on the river (vs mid 70s at the top). Good luck!

Check out Backcounrtypost. There are a ton of people from that area. They could guide you in the right direction. I've gotten many tips on the rocky mountain area from there. You can sign up for free and ask all the questions you want.
