The primary goal being to keep your kids away, any solid lockbox will do the job. A toolbox with a padlock will do the job. Just anything. Handguns are easy to secure from kids.

But since you also need to have a gun handy in an emergency, keep a small lockbox in arms reach in your bedroom. I use this one Bc it fits in my nightstand drawer and I can open it via code, fingerprint or key. I think it cost about $150.

I wouldn’t take that chance with kids in the house.

So I presented the options to the wife who felt that using simple locks on the non home defense firearms and a quick access safe like biglego suggested was a safe and economical solution for now. Any particular recommendations for that type of quick access handgun safe? I know it's not going to be that difficult to walk off with or break in to.

I have a V-Line Brute and it is very good. Look at the testing it’s a great value.

This is the one I have but I think I found it cheaper on amazon. It’s perfect for my needs as I have two little kids. This safe does have holes in the bottom if you want to bolt it down.

I purchased a cheap Stack-on gun cabinet for all my long guns and pistols. I have a coded lock box next to the bed for quick access, and I keep the keys to the gun cabinet in the lock box. The cabinet I can attach to the floor or wall.
I may be mistaken but isn't even if your cabinet survives the fire your guns will have been cooked inside?
