Hunting in Sonora is an expensive proposition. Most hunts average anywhere from $12,000 to $15,000.

They do turn out some giants. A lot like some South Texas whitetail deer the body size is quite small making the racks look enormous.

To be clear, I have never hunted there myself. I do know several people that have.

Hunts generally take place in January. Deer in excess of 180 inches are not unheard of. Every year many over 200 inches are taken. Mexican mule deer are known for being wide. Many cross that mythical and highly desired 30” mark.

The hunting usually consists of shooting from a high rack mounted to the back of a pickup truck and cruising the desert flats while glassing.

Success rates are highly variable depending on what outfitter you choose. I’ve heard stories of seeing many deer in excess of 160 inches over the course of a week long hunt. I’ve also heard horror stories of poorly managed properties where the deer are few and far between. Eating tag soup happens more than it should. That’s the risk of hunting Mexico.

As a general rule, I will never wire money to a foreign country. You are totally unprotected should you end up selecting a crook. For that reason, I would choose to book with an American based outfitter such as WTA or the like.

Nice mule, 243 or 338?

Got this guy with the 6.5-300 WBY in some serious crosswinds. Made short work of the 200 yard shot.
