Golf cart repair question

Purchased a golf cart and had to change out the batteries and solenoid. Once I changed them out the cart ran perfect, but the batteries were not charging when I hooked it up to the charger. The old batteries charged before I replaced them. I purchased a new charger (previous one was really old) but the new one didn’t charge the batteries either. I believe it has something to do with my new solenoid. The old solenoid did not have labeled the positive and negative pegs on it. Does anybody know if the wire from the charging mechanism hooks to the positive or negative peg of the solenoid? Any help with this is greatly appreciated

What kind of cart is it

Your battery charger should be hook up to the battery positive. Not to the pedal switch start

Both battery lugs to the large posts. gnd and pedal to the smaller posts. Did you also replace the diode or did it have one in the first place? Without the diode, when the field collapses in the coil a large inrush of current can backflow to the controller. Not good for the controller and not sure if Yamaha has and on board computer type setup like club car, but if they do it may not be telling the charger to come on if it is damaged.

What model number is the Golf Cart. Might be able to get you the wiring diagram.

Not sure if model number. Been trying to find diagrams but none tell me exactly how to hook it from what I see

I replaced all the cables for batteries, solenoid and batteries themselves. I didn’t mess with any of the other wiring besides the main cable from the solenoid to the battery

I recently rebuilt a cart (Club Car, not Yamaha) and I had to replace a small in-line fuse that ran from the charging port to the on-board computer. Assuming the solenoid is wired correctly, may be worth checking for a blown fuse somewhere.
Drove me crazy because I did not think to check it and was re-checking all my wiring a second time before finding it.
Hopefully, this helps.
edited to add link for determining year/model for Yamaha carts:

Probably a G16E, but I am also a Club Car Guy. Here is a video on replacing that solenoid: LINK
and a link to the wiring diagram:

It does look like there is an inline fuse on the charging outlet wiring similar to the Club Cars. If that is blown, the carts computer can't tell the charger to come on or off (if it works like the Club Cars).

Also what is the voltage on the battery pack itself?

36 volt. And I’ll be honest, those wiring diagrams are pretty much Greek to me

From the charger outlet on the cart, trace the wires and see if one has a fuse in the line, check that fuse.

Also take a voltage reading at the outlet on the cart.

Did you ever determine the model number for your cart?

So far from what I can see the charger has all the smarts in it on that year. If it’s not charging are you sure everything is good from the charging outlet on the cart back to the batteries?
