No. Plenty of people with good retrievers that lay on the couch when they're not hunting.

Mine isn’t a standard size, she’s 30 pounds, but she will fetch like a mofo for about 5 minutes max. Like someone said above, she goes and lays down immediately after. I think she gets overheated quickly with her coat. Also, she hates getting in water so she wouldn’t be worth a damn as a bird dog. She won’t swim in a pool and she hates baths. I can’t imagine one as a bird dog due to the absolute mess of a matted coat they would have and all the crap stuck in it after they get out the water all day. Nightmare.

Is it true that you have to keep your bird dogs kenneled for the most part? Only let them out to train, work or go to the bathroom?

Not sure about all bird dogs but definitely not retrievers, I have had 3 very good working retrievers and all of them were family pet type ride around the truck on errands and slept in the house sometimes type of dogs.

Our GSP is part of the family. She'll work her arse off in the field all day for me then crash next to me on the couch afterwards.

My King Charles Spaniel would've been a good one. Phenomenal nose and eyesight and he loved to retrieve.
