Should I just take one of my ARs with me instead? Moved to IN from AL, and I'm headed back for a week to see family. Tried to get my permit before I left, but IN does it backwards up here.

The state capital does all the checks for all permits so you have to wait up to 60 days. You go to the police department to do the app and fingerprints, then they send it off for approval. Takes 2 months supposedly.

Anyway, I have my S&W Shield unloaded with 3 unloaded mags and a 50 round box of rounds in a case inside my suit case. but i feel like that's just never gonna work out for me if i need it.

so, since in my mind, you don't need a permit to carry a long gun, i figured i'd just take a few loaded mags and my AR, put up in a case of course, and keep it within reach. that should be fine right?

If driving, check the laws of all states you'll be driving through the make sure your AR and mags are legal for that state in case you get pulled over.

How about frick what the laws are because carrying your gun right now for protection is a necessity.

Not only that. You've got to be cognizant of EVERYTHING you must do for each state. You've gotta know if the rifle needs to be cased, where the ammunition has to be in relation to the rifle, what kind of container the ammunition can be in during transport, etc.

It's up to you how many of those laws you're going to follow. Carrying the rifle for protection seems like it's worthless unless it's next to you and loaded (though not necessarily chambered). If it's gotta be in the trunk with your pistol, is it even worth bringing?

ETA: Let's not say "worthless". Let's say "less useful".
