Anyone deal with a family dog that has repeat giardia? Our new pup can’t seem to kick it. We have tried everything. Our house is so disinfected we could perform surgery and we constantly pick up poo even so much as using a bleach solution to spray down the area he pooped in the yard right after we pick up. We are at wits end here. Puppy has been through three rounds of panacur and one round of the other medication for this but he still has it.

Any advice? We have kids and an older dog in the house we are concerned about so we keep the pup quarantined. Problem with that is we are missing out on the best times for bonding with our new pup.

If it's a cycle of where he keeps getting reinfected thats one thing but if you think the meds aren't actually clearing the giardia there may be another option. What was the other medicine that he was given? Flagyl/metronidazole?

Seriously, get a new vet, yours is too young or inexperienced. A country vet might be best.

Does he still have it after the mtz?

Ask your vet if they have ever tried Alinia (nitazoxanide) for it.

If you want to try it come back and I can give u some advice on how to get it. Its not cheap.

I guess its possible depending on what test they used and if the person looking at it doesn't know what they are looking at. The drugs they have used are supposed to be broad spectrum but have been around forever. Its possible they are having an issue with resistance but it sounds like the vet thinks the dog is getting reinfected hence the cleanliness and bleach where he craps. It is also possible the there is some other coinfection they are missing. Likely using stool tests that may not be sensitive enough to identify something else going on. More sensitive tests are going to be more expensive. I would imagine the vet has looked for any immune issues right? A weakened immune system could explain the recurrence but seems high on the list of things to check. I am not a vet...just have experience with antibiotics for humans and a lot of the same logic applies for dogs. Also...i have grown up with animals and have gotten experimental with stuff in the past like treating at home. Its amazing how many drugs are available online lol

The test will be stool smear in which the parasite is visually detected under a microscope.

Does your dog go outside? Interact with other dogs or animals? Squirrels and cats can carry Giardia as well.

Cysts are able to survive in extreme conditions for up to a month, even household cleaners may not wipe everything out. Could be a reinfection...

Also, is the stool still loose? If it is normal or approaching normal then it might be on the right track. The meds will likely not wipe out all of the parasite.

Someone mentioned in another site I posted about this that I make sure that the vet isn’t testing for the antigen otherwise it may keep coming up positive. Apparently the antigen can stay viable for a month or more. Someone also mentioned putting the pup on probiotics to help condition the digestive system to fight off the giardia.

Be very careful with this, my brand new expensive lab contracted it and it was nasty. Vet wouldn't give shots (parvo) until it cleared up and she/I forgot about the parvo. Yep, she contracted parvo and i cost me another $1,000 to keep her alive.

Science are finding that it is difficuly to determine just how much probiotics help...at least in humans. It cant hurt tho..i imagine. Does the dog eat?
