The difference between a flounder and a sting ray is the flounder knows he needs to flee. The ray, he's armed nuclear and might just decide to use the Stand Your Ground law.

I was diving in about 40 feet of water a few years ago when I had a close encounter. I was perpendicular about a foot from the bottom when a student spooked it. For whatever reason, it darted to right below me, then buried itself. This was like a month or two after Steve Irwin died in similar fashion, so it scared the shite out of me.

Seriously, though, I lipped one for a picture.

Seriously, watch out for the stingrays.

I have several friends who have been stung in the leg before and all agree it is the worst, most painful thing they have ever been through. Some took months to heal, and to this day years later it just hurt randomly.

One guy has been shot before and said its nothing compared to the damn stingray.

My uncle got stung by one on his arm during a trip. Holy shite the boat looked like a murder scene. He said it was the most painful experience of his life.

I've always used my Coleman Duel Fuel lantern with foul and a pie plate. I find it the perfect lightness. I also have an old pair of Reebok high tops that only get worn during flounder gigging trips for ray protection. I also have a mortar hoe handle which is longer and sturdier than a broom or shovel, spike no barb and stringer. I wear a glove also. When I hit the gig the hoe handle is heavy enough to hold the flounder with one hand. Lighter gigs you tend to have to use both hands and really lay on it.

Good luck. I haven't been in a couple years but we had a large group that would take our boats and camp on last island for several days and just slam the trout, reds and flounder. Stuff it and cook over an open fire and you will be in heaven.
