very valid point but I'm still not going to worry about dieing from getting bit unless I'm in Arizona in some national park and days away from help.

If you are anywhere in the Southeast you should absolutely be able to get to a hospital in time.

BTW, I have made the decision that I will only seek treatment/antivenin if bitten by a large rattlesnake. Copperheads and Cottonmouths are fairly mild compared to a rattlesnake. Not to mention that antivenin shots are REALLY expensive.

Bonus chick getting bit by a rattlesnake vid: IIRC, it cost her 50k

If a person dies during the hospitalization after being bitten and then receiving antivenom and developing serum sickness the cause of death would be recoreded as snake bite.

serum sicknesss is nasty shite.

FWIW death is not the final outcome in bad snake bites but, compartment syndrome with resulting surgery, disfigurement, and loss of function in hands and feet is very common from the larger snakes. Copperhead bites are likely the least damaging of the the venomous snakes but they are very common bites.

You may not need to be afraid of death usually, but venomous snake bites can cause plenty of damage.

But think of all the arse you could pull if you were able to show a chick your knarled up hand and be able to tell her it was from a snakebite.

This is one reason I wouldn't (I think) seek treatment for anything other than a rattlesnake.

I could of swore that I read that Missouri banned the use of anti-venom for treating copperhead bites.
I think it was due to risk of anti-venom reaction combined with the fact that the anti-venom didn't seem to help much anyway.
Can't find anything about it being banned on the net so I may of drempt it.

treating copperhead bites

I don't think there has ever ben a recorded death from a copperhead bite almost ever. It would suck, like being stung by ten yellow jackets. A bite from an 8" pygmy rattle snake is much worse.

you think he would have felt guilty about not killing the snake if one of his friends got bit and died?

This is North America. We don't have the crazy, venomous snakes like they do in other parts of the world.

I'm still confused why you killed it. Was it bothering you? My guess is probably not. I'm sure this comment will go over like a lead ballon but you should have just let him go. Before you get started yes I have killed many snakes in my life but then again I have done lots of stupid things. I now know that they have their place and should be left alone.

Also Copperheads are rarely deadly. A friend of mine was bit 3 or four times as a small child like 2 or 3 years old. Still has a small scar between his fingers but other then that no ill effects.

Anyway leave snakes alone unless its him or you and in that case well you know what to do. My one exception is if you are going to eat it in that case enjoy.
