I just heard that the Greater Lafourche Port Commission has signed a 99 year lease with the Wiesner (sp) foundation to develop an extension of C-port into a rig building and repair ship yard among other projects.
I really fell out with the red arse when I heard this news because once again former public land that was used for significant recreational opportunities is being taken over/gifted to private industry. This area used significant amount of taxpayer money to reinforce the beach with rocks and barges, dredging to help preserve the beach and dunes surrounding it. The project will change Fourchon beach to Fourchon island. for this new development
So once again the public is fricked and business is making off like bandits due to using so much taxpayer money to basically build a new port area. Pisses me off!!!

Doesn’t that money go to NOLA coffers?

I hated it too, but looking back that place was a cesspool of trash when the public could use it freely. We did it to ourselves.
Never in my life seen so much trash, until I went to holly beach and it’s as bad over there

i'm willing to bet the amount of public money spent on that land is dwarfed in comparison to the amount of taxes brought in by the port

Yeah maybe so but they are also working on getting the area classified as a foreign trade zone which would negate all current taxes. If that happens then our local govt agencies and school district will lose huge amounts of revenue that they have depended on for many years. Hell, they tried at a recent legislative session to pass a law to where local agencies could not tax any materials that were for use off shore. It failed but then the port started with the foreign trade zone crap.

Yep that’s the same model/pic that I saw outlining the project.

So are they going to rebuild the bridge to get there, or are they going to barge everything in?

The beach from the water line to the highest tide of the year level is public land. Last year I had a damn rent a cop try to run me off of Fourchon beach that I had accessed via boat. I told him to call the sheriffs office if he thought he could prosecute for trespassing. He backed off then but that is total bullshite.

I don't know much about this situation, but it seems from North La to the tip of the south La, Louisiana always finds a way to grossly mismanage resources and taxes. Truly sad really, La should be so much better ran with the resources available.

I think that deal expired in 2014.

The main drama pits Wisner’s descendants, who want the existing arrangement to continue indefinitely, against the Landrieu administration, which argues not only that the trust should be dissolved, but that Wisner’s heirs never should have gotten a share of the land or its income to begin with.

“For nearly 100 years, the purported heirs of Edward Wisner have unjustly and personally benefited from trust funds that their forbears intended to serve the public good,” the Landrieu administration argued in court filings last month.

So Mitch wanted to steal from the Wisner descendants.
