I have an old Honda Foreman 400. Was using it today and noticed the brakes seemed to be holding as it wouldn’t coast at all. Front brake handle was also very stiff. I noticed the front right brake line appears broken.

What do I need to do to make this thing usable asap? I can live without the brake for now.

Should be a bleed on the caliper or drum you can open. If it's drums though, you might have to take the drum off and push the shoes back in. Probably broke a return spring or something. Honda brakes used to be extremely horrible for some reason.

This is a ‘98 model, I believe.

You may or may not be able to adjust the brake shoes using the star adjuster nut and a flat head screw driver. Those stars can get pretty crusty and corroded.

If you like and are keeping the bike do a disc caliper upgrade.

Like 220 bucks.

Best thing ever

Following. I have a 1996 Foreman 400 with the same problem. Won’t be back to the camp for 2 weeks when I can address it.

I assumed I just needed to change the brake fluid since I can’t remember the last time I did it.

Shuttle in master cylinder is usually the culprit. It freeze and won't shuttle to bleed off pressure.

Best would be collapsed brake line.

Again. Disc caliper upgrade is cheap and no troubleshooting needed.

Horrible front brakes on those bikes and expensive to fix.
I would see if you can get a disc brake conversion kit for for it.
They used to be around 250 for the kit and easy to install

Highly likely the stock front brakes are frozen/rusted and you wont be able to do anything with the current setup. A rebuild is needed. Like another poster stated look into doing the disc conversion. The conversion will likely cost less than replacing the stock components.
Been there done that!

I see how the drums in the hub work/function. What’s not clear to me is what’s going on upstream of that. The line is broken and maybe it has been for some time. I guess the shoes have gradually rusted and the heat yesterday caused them to finally seize up.

For now, gonna open up the hub and just see if I can remove the shoes. Honestly, we’ve never really used the front brakes on this machine in 25 years of ownership.
