Ford Trailer Brakes

I know we have a lot of Ford owners on here so I thought I would see if anyone could help me.
I have a 2013 F150 and when I pull a trailer, I get a "Check Brake System" message on the screen and the emergency brake light comes on. Everything goes off if I kill it. It only does this while towing a trailer. Any help would be appreciated.

Ive got an expedition and there's a "towing" button that you push. Basically just turns off the overdrive. Could that be the issue?
..based on your description I dont think so, but just throwing this out there.

Here's another Ford oddity when towing. My wife's Explorer will not send the signal to the trailer brake solenoid unless the headlights are on. The boat trailer will stop you dead as you back up our driveway.

Truck has less than 1,000 miles so I don't think it would be the batteries. I talked to dealership and they told me it was in the settings. I should choose "electric over hydraulic" in the trailer brake mode. It was set on "electric". I hope they're right.
