A: A bilge pump with external auto switch.
Or
B: A Bildge pump with internal auto switch?
Both have good qualities. The external swicth can be replaced probably unlike internal one. That said the internal one doesn't need and extra space to mount the external switch.

External. Its gonna get clogged up, and external is usually quicker to clean.

External. It is easier to bypass in an emergency than an internal one....even when they have a switched power on it is easier to simply bypass any switches should the need arise. External switches also seem to last slightly longer, in my experience. None last long enough but the external ones seem to be slightly higher quality...and are easier to test also...simply lift it and the pump should start.

I have an internal switch. It has never clogged or failed - of course it's only 13 years old.

Externals, the float switch getting broken is fairly common. Cheap repair, though.
On the auto, the footprint is larger but unless you’re parking it under a cypress tree or the such it shouldn’t clog.

I keep the boat under a shed so leaves aren't a problem. I think I'll get the two separate. I'm going to get the 3D printer involved to make a mount/guard for the remote switch.

Mine has both -- and this is on a duck boat! It usually runs automatically but I also have a manual switch.

External float wired straight to battery (fused or breaker power of course). And manual switch wired in to allow you to turn it on without float activated.

Probably overkill on a smaller boat, but I will never use any float other than the USS Ultra Bilgeswitch paired with a Rule 1500 or 2000GPH pump. The USS Ultra switches are $$$, but will last you the life of your boat and never stick. The Rule/Attwood/other cheap brand flapper switches are absolute trash.
