Had a lot going on since moving in July so I didn't have time to do food plots. I hunt two pipelines in WP and the larger one was mowed by the pipeline company the other day. Our big goal the past year was to limit traffic as much as possible so I don't want to bring a tractor in and disc. For reference I've got quite the view on this thing. It's 40 yards wide and 1,500 yards long and my box is in the middle of it.

I'm looking to cast seed and fertilizer on 600 yards of it. My thought is just do rye grass because it will pop up quick, but do you guys have any suggestions? I know it's late, but this area is a January place anyway. Just need to get something to come up in two weeks that's different and maybe get a few more does to move over to attract the bucks for January.

I would go with winter wheat, and spread it Saturday morning before the rain.

Unfortunately stupid offshore strikes again. I plan on doing it Thursday the 14th. Not gonna hunt there for another week after that anyway.

“Traffic” doesn’t bother deer if they have the things they want and need within reason. Running a tractor for a day is not going to impact anything in January. That said you’re way late now and aren’t going to get appreciable growth for the money you’ll spend on seed. What I’d do is just run a disc over the entire thing and break the dirt, release the seed bed, and let it eat.

So you want to plant 4 acres without discing? Go to tractor supply or a feed store and get 150lbs of gulf annual rye grass, and 25lbs of arrowleaf or crimson clover, and plant a 20 yard strip in the middle and do 2 acres.

I wouldn’t expect any miracles as far as attracting, the rye grass pretty much just makes the deer stand out, and clover is more of a late winter early spring forage. Deer prefer oats over rye, but I don’t think that’s going to do as well without drilling or discing.

Fertilizer (13-13-13) is recommended at like 300lbs per acre, but if I was doing rye I wouldn’t even worry about it, it’s gonna green up and give you something to look at.

this and top with Rye Grass and 13-13-13 to protect it from over-grazing
