To save space in the milk crate I carry, I keep a small jar of Gulp shrimp and then added in Gulp crabs, minnows, DOA shrimp, Gulp shad, H&H cocahoes, and all my other soft plastics to soak in the solution and conserve storage space. It's worked well so far.

I've thrown cast net and put minnow traps for bait there before. Caught quite a few shrimp. Lost 2 cast nets to rocks though.

Also, is it legal to catch a redfish with a casting net and is it even possible? I've never thrown a casting net but encountered a few reds yesterday that were a couple of feet from my yak and waving at me with the spots on their tails. If I had a bow or net I would have been set. The weren't hungry for shrimp at the time.

I think he was being serious. At least I was thinking that it would be a badass idea.

Can't wait to get my kayak out there in the marsh after some reds. Going try to get on the bass tomorrow evening.

I was being serious.
It really is a great idea. I need to get the jar next time instead of the bags.
I'm not sure about the legality of it. I've tried catching sheepshead in a cast net but the 6' was too big to get open without throwing it all the way out. Maybe a 3' would be easier. Seems like it would be pretty tough with reds, but I'm sure it's possible. Would need one with heavy weights.
I bet you could throw a cast net from that KC beig that it's so stable. Good way to catch a little live bait for the trip.

I caught a metric shiteload of sac a lait in the BC spillway once with a cast net. Water was hummin thru a culvert, and I just threw it in there to see what I'd catch. Caught a bass, and a friggin huge carp too.
I do NOT think it's legal to do so, BTW. Especially on a redfish. Gamefish status and all...

I could have gaffed a few redfish from my yak yesterday

No they don't give anyone shite.Real nice guy that owns that camp.
Good parking along the roadside right there too.
Edit: one day I was chest deep throwing my 6' cast net in between the two rock jetties in Fourchon catching huge white shrimp every cast.Every predator you can think of was also chasing them and I caught everything in my cast net that day.
Hardheads, trout, stingrays, and yep,,about 7 Redfish all in the 18" range.
Three em all back because you can't trap game fish period.
Also ruined the test of my week vacation by stepping on a damn Stingray that day

2 of each of the following lures
Posted on 3/19/12 at 8:22 pm to Blue Velvet
caught 4 reds and a 16" spec off la 1 (north side) about a mile past fourchon. 1/4oz gold spoon. one of the reds would have been a MONEY slot fish for PP. She'll be in my court bouillon instead!
hell thinking about it, that red + that spec + any flounder and I'd have been on the winners stand.

Those crab baits work?
And on the bottom row, is that just a couple of regular zoom flukes, like the bass bait? And That worm looks like a bass bait as well, though I know you can wear out reds on some bass baits.

Don't know. Might head down to Cocodrie this weekend or next because after that my weekends are shot til mid May.

quote:Hope so. I drag them on the bottom in shallow water for reds & flounder but have only fished them about 10 minutes total and haven't gotten a bite yet. I keep stuff like that to try after I've already got a limit in the yak... so not very often.

quote:Yup. Hooked to a popping cork with a light hook or without a cork and a heavy hook for the shallows. Basically like a cocahoe. Fish are dumb.

quote:I keep some bass lures in there & haven't used those for reds. However, I keep them with the saltwater lures incase I need a new grub to hook to my redfish spoons.

A fluke seems like it would work well when they want something slow but near the top.

I never put a grub on a spoon, I need to try that. I need to pick some up to try as a spinnerbait trailer for bass as well
