First Turkey Hunt Questions

So I am going on my first turkey hunt. I’m going with my cousins in Texas so it’s family and I’m sure they will make fun of me for whatever I do, but it’s all in good fun.
I’m a deer/hog hunter, but I’m a terrible bird/duck hunter. So I have a few questions: Will I be fine with just a cheap 12 gauge? Do I need to wear like full camo? They said just a camo shirt and jeans were fine but I don’t trust them lol. Anything else I should know before going?

I’m assuming they’re planning to hunt out of a blind which is why they said jeans. If you’re hunting on the ground, full camo, face mask, and gloves are important. The most important thing is staying still. Get your gun into position where you have to make minimal movement to shoot.
Cheap 12 gauge is all you need. A full choke should do fine unless you have something tighter. Buy some turkey loads, 5 shot lead is popular (don’t worry about TSS). Make sure you pattern it at least at 30 yards (preferably at 40 also), to get an idea of your range and point of impact.
ALWAYS remember to keep your head down TIGHT on the gun. Looking straight down the rib. Most people miss because they don’t keep their head down (or they didn’t pattern the gun).

camo shirt and jeans
Saw an old redneck kill a turkey once wearing a black wife beater and some jeans.
I would never.

If you shoot one over a feeder or with a rifle your wife will leave you
Because she will know you are gay

12ga with TSS and a modified choke over decoys. It’s very easy to miss one.

I’m guessing that it was downvoted because TSS is pricey and not necessary for a 12 gauge. Patterning is more important and somebody who never turkey hunted is probably not going to want to do that with shells that cost $12 a piece.
Also, TSS out of a modified choke is probably going to put quite a few pellets in the breast.
I’m not hating on TSS. I started using it in a 12 gauge, but I turkey hunt all season long.

When my daughter was young I had her shooting a modified choke because I was scared she’d miss. 20 gauge TSS at 25 yds is still a pattern about like a pie plate. Maybe just a tad larger.

$12 shell is cheap part of hunting. Really cheap in comparison to all the other crap.

No doubt. It’s a good thing I don’t track my fuel usage. Between that, boarding the dogs, and out of state licenses… my costs per turkey are pretty high.

You can buy 20+ big turkeys at Walmart, just for the price of the Texas hunting license.
Turkeys have excellent eye site. If you see one, it has already seen you. If you move, it must be at a "snail's" pace. Move so slow that it does not look like you are moving.
Try this. Turn you head all the way to one side. Then very slowly turn your head all the way to the other side. If this takes less than 20 seconds ---- you are moving too fast.
This same slow movement also applies to your gun. If you move too fast, you won't be able to get a shot. Turkeys can run really really fast.

Ive killed over 150 birds in my life and camo is very important unless your in a blind. Shotgun needs to be patterned to know how far you can shoot

Get the GD TSS shells if available if not longbeards X-RAY, 3 1/2 inch if u can shot them
Fortunately, you are hunting the dumbest turkeys on the planet, the actually come when called etc but they are huge and not easy to kill. Very Tall birds and often travel in packs.
Next get or use your gloves and go to Academy or something and get a proper face covering if you don’t have already for deer. A shooting stick isn’t a bad deal either. If you miss they are going to tease you forever.
Texas uses that brownish camo pattern can’t remember the name but they know at academy.
My first trip to Texas called in a massive Rio in full gobbling strut fanning like in TV, and I shot him at 30 feet, could hear pellets hit, but he flew off. After checking my gun I was so far off at 30 yards not even on the card. (I killed my first good bama bird few days before and screwed up damn red dot) Did get my bird the same day but nothing like that first one.
So check your gun and pattern
