I need to put down quite a bit of fertilizer in my yard. I know we have a decent storm coming through tonight, and I didn't know if I should fertilize this afternoon before the rain, or wait another week or so until it warms up a bit more and less rain.

I don't see any projected amounts of rain, im hoping it will come through pretty quick. I don't want to spend all that money and put my fert down and have it washed away. Any opinions if I should do it today or wait for a bit?

If it’s weed and feed , you don’t want to do it before a rain. You want to apply it to a already moist yard or put it out and let the morning dew moisture it. Rain will wash the weed killer off the weeds rendering it ineffective.

If it’s just fertilizer I would apply it before the rain that way it will break down and get into the soil.

I always thought you wanted to put weed and feed down before a rain so it wouldn’t burn up the grass

I’m far from an expert though

If you get too much rain, it's not good for the fertilizer.

For best results, you want the temp to average over 60 and you want to use sprinklers (so you control how much water is laid down)

Next time you get some take a look at the instructions, I use to water it in too for years, but it tells you to not water for a day or more so the weed killer can sit on the leaves of the weeds to kill them.

From Scott’s weed and feed how to use :

1) Check the Weather: If rain is in the forecast in the next 24 hours, apply another day. Rain can wash the particles off of weed leaves before it has a chance to work properly.

2) Fill and Set Spreader: Applying Scotts® Turf Builder® Weed & Feed requires a lawn spreader. If you need a new spreader, you can find one here. Refer to the Spreader Settings section above to set your spreader properly.

3) Apply to Wet Lawn: Make sure the grass is wet from dew or sprinkling before applying. This helps particles adhere to weed leaves to produce best results. For even application walk at a steady pace slightly overlapping each pass. After applying this product you don't water your lawn for at least 24 hours. Just like rain, watering your lawn after applying Weed & Feed washes the weed control particles off of weed leaves before they can fully work.

4) Clean-Up: Sweep product from hard surfaces onto the lawn to keep valuable feeding nutrients on the grass and out of storm drains.

Just FYI: Those instructions are from one type and Scott’s turf builder. The Bonus S bags have different instructions saying you apply to dry grass then water in. Just read the bag before you put anything down.

1. Apply to dry lawn: Make sure grass is dry prior to application.
2. Fill and Set Spreader according to spreader settings on label.
3. Water-in product to lawn after application. Do not water to the point of run-off.
4. Clean-Up: Sweep product from hard surfaces onto the lawn.

I'm applying straight 33-0-0. I already applied a couple rounds of 3 way herbicide and msm turf, so I'm not doing weed and feed. Continuing to watch the weather and it looks like the rain will come through pretty quick in the morning. I thought about waiting and just watering it in, but my yard is too big to effectively get all of the nitrogen into the soil. I can hit quite a bit of it with sprinklers, but want to make sure that my investment doesn't evaporate away. Will be applying when I get off this afternoon while everything is still dry so I don't burn the grass by letting it sit on wet leaves.

The old timers always said to fertilize after the rain. The sun would melt it in.
