I spent 14 days in Roatan, July 2002, near the West Bay beaches. I didn't dive or snorkel. Only swam. Water is crystal clear. I couldn't get over the amount of Europeans there on holiday, snorkeling and diving.
I also spent eight days in Turks and Caicos, August 2010. It reminded me of Roatan. I hand caught a lobster (only one) while snorkeling. I also loved watching a particular school of ten squid. They pulsated light waves throughout their bodies. I guess it's their form of communication. I never knew that they are such iridescent organisms!
Nonetheless, I'd place Roatan above TC, ever so slightly, as my favorite snorkel spot. Roatan was surprisingly populous, inclusive and inexpensive. You don't have to travel far on the island to have a blast.
Taking just a cruise to Roatan will do it no justice. The port at Coxen Hole is only the tip of the iceberg/island.

That's pretty awesome, actually

Forgot to mention that. While in Roatan we did some night snorkling with lights and caught a dozen spinys.

If you have a boat we can probably make something happen. Until I get a boat of my own I'm at the mercy of invites for dive trips.

Gotcha. I'm not ready to go extreme like you anyway. I just want to go and see it. I've never dove the rigs. I've wondered about just doing a freedive when we're out fishing. None of my fishing buddies dive.

I highly reccommend trying some freediving at a platform w/ bluewater.
Just need a mask, fins, and snorkel

I logged over 250 dives in the Red Sea when I worked in Saudi years back.
Wordscan't begin to describe it. Just incredible. And the spearfishing was out of this world.
Tried to dive the Gulf when I returned stateside.
Kinda like dating a Victoria's Secret model and then having to go out with Rosie O'Donnell.
Makes one wish for the good ol days.

Not really a diver but have snorkeled a few places:
snorkeled in Maui & Key West/Dry Tortugas NP; went diving and snorkeling in Antigue on honeymoon. Antigua was cool but I think my favorite so far was snorkeling out on the Dry Tortugas with a huge school of tarpon all around us. This was at Fort Jefferson NP along the walls of the fort. Have heard great things about Bonaire but never been

Isla Mujeres( reef off the southern end of island)
Costa Rica, Pacific side, northern part, up near the national forest. Forget the name of the smal town we stayed, very blue water, shallow with deep drop off just off shore.

Cozumel last year was my first time. I really enjoyed it but I have no other experiences to compare it to. Where would a place like cozumel rank for curiosity purposes?

Diving locally is very underrated, particularly in winter. The water clears and the color is great. Lot's of shipwrecks and underwater life.

Last place I snorkeled was Sanibel Island in the early 70's. Still get the heebee jeebees thinking about the biting things that must have been in the water.
