Anyone here done any fall turkey hunting before? I live in Louisiana so it is non existent but I've been wanting to take my dad on a fall trip soon just to see what it's like. Only have done spring hunting so any recommendations on places to go would be very much appreciated!

It's totally different than Spring turkey.

The callings and serenading and all things we love about spring hunting goes out the window in the fall. We are supposed to be getting tags in Mississippi this season and I have 1 tag for Oklahoma so I'm hoping I can add some white meat to the deep freeze

What he said.

It's more akin to deer hunting than spring turkey hunting. A lot of just waiting and trying to intercept them on feeding routes. Hen calling can work especially if you can disperse the flock as they'll use calling to gather back up eventually.

I heard some this past Friday while squirrel hunting, hens anyway. Gobblers weren't making a peep.

If I had to go fall turkey hunting I would head to Missouri. Lots of public land and normally lots of turkeys. Hunted for over 30 years around Fort Leonard Wood Military Base on national forest as well as on Fort Leonard Wood(certain areas are open daily). Had GREAT success in the spring. Probably fall season it is much less pressure than spring.

The hunting is different in the fall. More similar to deer hunting, as a few posters have mentioned. You can still call birds up in the fall, but you won't be calling a gobbling toms, you'll be calling at large winter flocks.

I've always wanted to hunt fall birds with a dog as some of the old timers do in the north woods. The dog scatters the flock, then you yelp them up as they try to reform the large winter flock.
