Garmin ECHOMAP 93sv UHD with US LakeVu g3 and GT54UHD-TM Transducer (Certified Refurbished) $620
Very good for the money. Lots of used ones available on marketplace due to people upgrading units. It is livescope compatible so that is important. Even if you don’t use livescope, resale will be better with the ones that are compatible. I don’t believe the Striker line of units are compatible with LS.
Side imaging is not the best, compared to hummingbird, but it’s super simple to use, like all garmin units.

I know I’ll get some backlash but oh well. No FFS, teach him how to fish, read water and conditions 1st.

If I was only allowed one unit, it would be a Hummonbird 360. I have learned more about a body of water in one day with unit in comparison to twenty years of trial and error.
My ranking would be:
1. Humminbird 360
2. Humminbird Side Imaging
3. FFS

Absolutely, need to be able to be in the right location first then use electronics to dial it in.

Keep an eye on the Bass Boat Central used electronics forum. Lots of deals on lightly used electronics as so many are upgrading. The 93SV UHD is an excellent unit for side imaging. If you find one without the transducer I will donate a new GT54. Have several laying around.

Get him those VR goggles to go with his live scope and it’ll be just like playing a video game for him.
