If you haven't changed the oil since 1988, you're gonna have a problem.
My dad has an 18 sea ray with mercruiser from the 80's and he's rebuilt it a couple times.

There are no dumb questions.
Ok, maybe that is a dumb question.

Fack. I called craftsman/sears about my tractor puffing white smoke and dying on me; under warranty. Told me to put a can of sea foam in it and wait 3 days before I called again.

It's a marinized car engine and unless you possess mad mechanical skills, the entire lineup of craftsman tools, you come from a family of contortion artist, have a shop with a overhead lift, or are willing to pay out the azz for someone else to work on it( if you can even find a shop willing to anymore) I would not suggest ownership.
