We have looked at Pomme de Terre and Spring Bayou. We are curious, whats the duck hunting like, ease of access on foot (waders) or boat (jon boat). How crowded are we looking both during the week and on the weekend? Any information on these two WMA's would be great!

I know some people who hunt Lake Ophelia NWR, which is in that area, and they say it's money. A friend of mine also hunted on private land near Hamburg and said the same thing, but had a problem with alligators early in the season. As far as ease of access, I'd love to know. I have neither a boat nor a 4-wheeler and would love to find a duck hunting spot that I can walk to.

so I have a fix for a.j. It looks like he'll be using my 870. When I asked my dad to ship one of his shotguns he said he probably wouldn't be able to. Instead he told me to go out and buy this. Told him he didn't have to but he it'll be an early early gift. So I went and picked it up last night.

Can be very good on both. I hunt private land on the north side of Pomme and we do very well.

Spring Bayou is pretty much exclusive to boat and pomme, well its pretty tricky you will need a boat 90% of the time.

Weekends will be VERY crowded, but during the week it slows down a pretty good bit.

Overall they are great places to hunt if you don't mind putting in the scouting time and also getting out early to beat the masses. If you have never been out there I would strongly suggest to stay away from either opening day, it is insane the amount of people at the landing at 2 a.m. Hope this helps if you got any other questions let me know, I grew up around those areas and am pretty familiar with both.

Spring Bayou can be very good but it is 100% boat access , and you really need a go-devil type motor with all of the grass.

Thanks for the info guy, we really appreciate it. I had a couple questions to add. Are both duck seasons good here? Or is the second one (dec. 18 to jan. 30) better after the cold's pushed more ducks down? On the weekdays when it's slow, what's a good time to show up and launch a boat? Thanks again.

Post your thoughts on that 887. I'm interested in getting a new shotgun, and the 887 is on my wish list.

Will do, plan on shooting it sunday. It was fairly cheap, $340 for the black model. I've done a lot of duck and goose with a little dove hunting with my 870 express, which i've had for 13 years or so, and never had a problem with it. In fact, my dad and god father have had more problems with their franchi I-12's than I have with my 870. I just hope I get the same durability with the 887.

Both season are typically pretty good, but of course the second split is always a little better. Pomme is very dry at the moment so you may only be able to really hunt it the second split. I would show up to the landing around 4ish during the week dependent upon what landing you use and how long of a run you may have. The key to Spring Bayou like anywhere is to get away from the people, if you can find a lil hole in the woods try that. One last thing in Spring Bayou stay LATE I can't tell you how many mallards I have killed after noon in that place.

We checked out Pomme a week ago and it seemed a little dry, was wondering if that's what it was supposed to be like. Thanks again for the info, really appreciate it!! Look forward to killing my first Louisiana duck this year.
