I don’t know how much the dogs feel going that route. In all honesty it went way better than I was afraid of yesterday. They gave her a sedative that basically put her to sleep and it took less than a min for the lethal drug to do the job. I don’t think she had an ounce of fear during the whole deal. She just faded to sleep very peacefully and that was it. With that as my first experience I’ll never do it differently.

My $.02 is that if you love your friend, it’s the smallest duty I could have to put her down peacefully. My vet bill is right at $300 to put her down which is a small price to pay for her to go comfortably in her own home. No uncomfortable loading into the truck and car ride to the vet and as far as she knew we just had house guests over to hang out. She didn’t know anything beyond that. I couldn’t go the route you’re going but I don’t judge others as long as it’s a quick and relatively painless death.

So sorry for your loss, but you did it right and are to be commended for that. So sorry for your loss.

I read a lot of stuff about knowing when it’s the right time and ran across an article that gave a great perspective. In nature there isn’t any death with dignity or fearless death. Euthanasia is truly a gift to your pet to go peacefully. In nature they either die of a medical condition, get mauled by another animal or lay down in a field for who knows how long until your body gives out. Hell, humans don’t even have the luxury of euthanasia. You die of whatever natural condition you get or whatever unnatural occurrence happens.

Today I feel a little empty without my friend but also relieved she isn’t struggling anymore.

My other pup is struggling a bit today. I think the permanence of the situation is starting to set in. But she’s laying right next to me and just sleeping and hanging out. She got a bath for the first time in a long time and we played fetch for a bit. I think she will be alright long term. Especially when we get her a new companion to keep her busy.

I really appreciate all of the comments in this thread. The outdoor board is definitely a good source to talk through with this sort of thing so sincerely to all you strangers, thank you.

I bought two BMC's a year ago, male and a female, so I could raise pups one day. The female got bit by a snake and died this past summer. It took several weeks for the male to get over her being gone. Anytime I'd ask him where's Lulu, he'd look at her kennel. I got lucky and bought another female right a way and he bonded with her.
