Is public dove scene absolute chaos? Assuming the answer is yes but wanted to hear what the OB has to say. Have never hunted dove in LA. Would be great to get out for a day or two this year before teal season gets going.

I have hunted public dove fields before. It is not too bad if your have realistic expectations. Typical problems when hunting public property…sky busting and setting up too close to you. Also, don’t plan on drinking beer while you are hunting. Obviously, have your licenses because there is a 100% chance you will be checked.

This cool snap is gonna have them booking it south.
We had 4-500 on a field one year the day before season, the temp dropped 5 degrees over night and every dang one of them left.

That's exactly what I was curious about. Thanks for that.

I am from North Alabama but I am sure it’s the same in Louisiana. There are some decent public hunts up here if you know where to look. You may be able to find some pay hunts but it might be too late depending upon when the season starts down there. I have shot my limit several times on public hunts in Georgia

Quota hunts? Clybel? Redlands? Walton?

Pigeon Mountain, Berry College, and West Point. I have been on a couple at Berry College that were really good.

Those were all quota hunts, right?

Berry College and West Point? Yes, but Pigeon Mountain is not unless that has changed in the last several years. My dad has a farm on Lookout Mtn that we usually hunt on but you can hear Pigeon Mountain off in the distance and it’s usually a decent hunt

I would just caution you on claims like "I have many dove limits on GA public land" without disclosing they are quota (lottery) hunts. It's deceiving to others.

I am not trying to say that public hunts are great but they can be decent hunts occasionally.

I think he is saying the hunts are lottery, not drive up and open to everyone.

As far as I know Pigeon Mtn isn’t either one unless that has changed in the last few years. Berry College used to have a limit on the number of hunters in the field but that may have changed as well but it wasn’t a lottery, drawn hunt

I will second that. It was years ago but they used to have some really good shoots and the crowds were not horrible. The only caveat that I can think of was there were far more pay shoots in the area then than now. Some seriously good pay shoots.

In my experience its hit or miss. Dove shooting is kind of a social gathering anyway so having people close is part of the experience. Depending on how the area is managed...assigned spots versus first come first served etc. can make a difference. It is also highly dependent on how isolated the area is. I Georgia the quality of public shoots that are not lottery shoots is directly proportional to the distance from Atlanta....the further it is from Atlanta the better it is likely to be. I have had some excellent dove shoots on public land in North Georgia and North Alabama but I have also been on them when they were overcrowded and had no birds. For the most part they were somewhere in the middle. They are better than not going at all. I would bet the people are more aggressive and will have more assholes in their numbers today just based on living in the US in 2024 as opposed to say 1984.

It’s nearly impossible to find pay shoots these days unless it is a hunting club. We burn 5 acres of millet and shoot over it. I have gotten my limit every year on opening day and several times on Labor Day but not this year since it didn’t fall right on the calendar for Georgia
