shite, sometimes that can be 50 to 100 miles offshore. It obviously changes drastically, but when we go that far to get to blue water we fish for marlin, tuna, wahoo, dolphin, etc. Don't waste time diving.

I'm not a spear fisher, but that could be a reason I guess.

well yea you would most definitely want a spear in your hand. And you can usually always find blue water under 50 miles

That's out of Venice. It's actually been years since I've fished off the LA coast. We used to always go out of the port of Iberia and it seemed like blue water was always really far out.

My uncle has had a boat in Pensacola for years now and getting to blue water is always quick, so we just don't fish off the LA coast anymore.

Diving in Louisiana

This is in our back yard, most people have no idea though

Don't just jump into rig diving blindly, go with someone with experience

Not really. The fishing out of Pensacola is excellent. Sometimes we head southwest and are actually off the coast of Bama, probably not that far from where you end up fishing (relatively speaking). Catch plenty of yellow fin, black fin, wahoo, dolphin, and marlin (blue and white) every now and then.

I've heard fishing out of Venice is good though. Have you ever been out of Pensacola?

Also, you dont need blue water at the surface to have blue water 30-40' down

When I shot these, it was 'blue water' at ~100' but you can not tell by the surface

I've been diving since I was 14 and I'll be honest, I've always been wary about spear fishing. I've caught AJ's and those frickers are so strong I can't imagine spearing one and having it drag me down.

Do you always have to make head shots when they are that big? If you don't, do they drag you down? My dad scared me when I was younger about how he speared a huge fish and he didn't realize he was way below 200 feet and shite was getting dangerous.

I don't know, I might like to try it one day, I just don't know much about it.

Head shots are obviously optimal

and those are actually on the "small" side when it comes to spearfishing

They will drag you down and pull you around. You have to be aware of your situation and keep composure.
