Looking to make a Archery public land trip next year for the rut possibly in Illinois. Anyone ever venture out that way and what is you Public Land of choice. I was thinking the Pinckneyville area. Any other suggestions as far as different States to go the Public land route. TIA

I'm assuming you mean archery right? I've never tried public but I'm guessing it's going to be pretty crowded for archery. Gun is draw by county so it may contain the amount of people but maybe not, given there's not much public land.

If you want to be picky and look for a 150 or bigger then Illlinois would be great, but someone of the lesser talked about states like Nebraska, Indiana, etc. would be great as far as just enjoying the Midwest rut and shooting a nice 135" 3.5 year old.

Fwiw you can find 5 day archery 'guided' hunts on private land for $1800-2000ish range. Go to a lesser known area like I said in Nebraska or Indiana and you have a great chance of routinely seeing really nice bucks. That's not a terrible price to just show up and hunt.

Spend like $2500 (pretty reasonable in my mind) and go guided in Buffalo County, Wisconsin. Why? Because Buffalo County, Wisconsin has 143 B&C entries (minimum typical score 160" and free range), which is more than any other county in the country by like 30-40

ETA: to put that into perspective the highest county in MS (Coahoma) only has 15. Tensas only has 5, Avoyelles only 8
