De-thatching a yard

How is this accomplished? Do you rent a machine or can you hire people?

Try the greenworks electric machine. It’s cheap on amazon.

If you use a push mower you can buy a de-thatching blade

Have you used one of these?

Yep I own one. Electric is good because I don't use it every year (a healthy lawn should remove thatch naturally but sometimes when you have a rough winter or have some invasive weed like virgina button weed and you have areas that turf just dies or otherwise accumulates too much thatch). It does a pretty good job of giving my turf some room to breathe.
Here's a fair and accurate Youtube review from my perspective. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AS5FVyobTds

I am going to post some pics of my yard tomorrow and maybe someone can tell me if I need to do this. Thanks.

I have one I pull behind my zero turn. Just got it from HD and just used it once. It pulled up a fair amount. My yard went to shite last year with a bad fungus outbreak and this winter.

I rent a machine, my yard and my parent's yard and split the rental fee. Use my yard vac to pick up the thatch.

Which one did you buy and did it do a good job?

water the perimeter of your yard and burn it. Saw this a lot as a kid growing up in South Alabama. As long as you can control it, I would burn it. Burning will get rid of all of the old grass as well as add nitrogen back into the soil. I have done this several times, and works well. Grass greens up really nice.

How did you remove the old grass?

I had already scalped and used my push bagger the weekend before but after using that I also bought a tow behind sweep. It worked ok...grass was short so it didn’t get it all. So the sweep removed some...the dethatcher grabs a lot that you pull off. Some is left behind but I think un packing and fluffing the thatch is helpful too? New to all this...yard was in such bad shape I wanted to try it all myself. I got one of the plug airiators and the broadcast spreader all tow behind, same brand.
I was paying someone before and 3/4 of my back yard was ate up with the “in active” fungus. So frick them lol.

Ok, thanks. I will probably just rent because I don’t really have the storage space.

Yea the crap does take up room but I have some space for it. Otherwise I would have just rented. Still not sure if that would have been better...time will tell.

Does this look like it needs to be de-thatched?

I bought a de-thatching rake. Talk about a workout. Think of the of the sweeping motion used during curling, except on grass.
Did make a huge different in grass quality on the areas I was able to get done. Realized quickly I wasn't going to be to do my whole yard and bought the pull behind from HD. In hindsight I'd probably just rent a de-thatcher as you might only use it once a year.
I can't tell from the picture but if you've never done it and don't always bag you clippings, and it isn't new sod then yes I'd imagine de-thatching would be good for it.

I called every place I could think of in Lafayette and no one even knew what a de-thatcher was. I ended up ordering the greenworks from amazon.

Looks like I have bad brown patch this year because of the bad winter. Would dethatching help the grass come back better or will it spread the fungus worst?
I also plan on spreading F Stop
Centipede lawn
