Crossing Lake Maurepas

Anyone have any advice. Ive never done it but would like to make the ride. I usually put in at the launch in Gramercy and take blind river all the way to Maurepas. Go to the sandbar hang out, what ever. Its getting old and would like to do something else. How long is the trip across the lake, what is there to do on the other side. Also is there any where to launch along hwy 55 to make the boat ride a bit shorter? Thanks for all of your suggestions!

Watch the weather close. That lake is shallow and can go from smooth to 3-4's with a thunder storm.

It's probably 10-11 miles across the lake from the mouth of blind river to hwy 55...You could launch at reserve canal off Airline Hwy in Reserve which enters the lake from the South side. There's a launch in Manchac also. You can hit Sun Bun's along HWY 55 bridge or the sandbar at the mouth of the tickfaw river also.
ETA: and i wouldn't advise crossing it when rough unless you're in a rig that can handle it

After looking at several charts this seems to be my best option, your are talking about pass manchac correct? How long a ride is it down pass manchac to Lake Pontchartrain? I am thinking about trying to make it to Madisonville. Is this stupid or is it worth the trip. I also hear there is some "beach" around Madisonville, is that true or false?
Thanks

What is your boat? Both lakes kick up because they both are shallow. I was running a 25 Mastercraft from Tickfaw to Pass Manchac a couple weeks ago and we were dry riding but it was rough. A big deep vee is nice.

I have a 19' century center console. Is this a bad idea in this size boat?

Yes, I was talking about the pass manchac launch...i've never run to madisonville, that is a fricking ride right there, I would advise against crossing ponchartrain in that size boat, that lake can kick up at any time during the summer as storms build

Not stupid. We used to do this just about every Sunday. It's not very far at all from the launch to Pontchartrain. The "beach" at Tchefunte always kind of looked lame, but T Rivers is awesome, as is Sun Buns if you're hammered. We were in a big deck boat though.

I've run in boats that size but just be aware. If you get caught you better be ready for a ride. Depends on your level of experience. And by that I don't mean experienced boaters can't get in trouble. I've been running them all my life and I've had a few hairy situations. Caught in the fog on South Pass and not knowing where the he'll that crew boat is that you can hear will draw your arse up.
Just be careful. And read the other thread about the boat sunk in Southwest Pass.

It's a great ride! Pass Manchac is about 7 miles long IIRC. It's not that far across to the Tchefunctu (sp?), you're basically just cutting across the corner of Ponchartrain. About 10 miles I think. Made the run July 4th weekend. There are some good resteraunts in Madisonville, I love going to Friends. Most of the sandbar at the mouth of the lake has washed away but still a great place to anchor and hang out. Not as much of a party place as Maurepas but its nice being in sand instead of mud. I wouldn't hesitate to make that run from the Manchac launch in your boat as long as you have a good weather forecast and use some common sense. Water usually kicks up in the afternoon so get over there early and don't stay too late. There's also a launch at the mouth of the river if you just want to put in over there. Also pay careful attention to the markers coming into or leaving the river. You can't just run straight in or out, the channel makes a 90 degree turn to the north, then another back to the west.

I make the run accross the lake from blind river to the tickfaw several times a year. The lake can get really nasty quick. If you have never been to the Prop Stop you need to go get yourself a worm bucket, a burger and do some people watching.

sun bunz isn't worth the trip across the lake. Madisonville is pretty nice from what I've heard. And worth the trip. And yes, you should be able to cross it in your boat. Just be sure to keep an eye our for thunderheads bc it'll be too late to run once you hear/see the rain clouds

is there another sunbuns on the diversion/amite?

ran from blind river to madisonville saturady. Don't remember exactly, but @ 10 miles across Lake M. 7 or 8 through pass manchac and then maybe 8-10 across Ponchartrain. Easy run, and very pretty area. Not much to look out for, except the channel coming into Tchefuncte makes a 90 turn. Follow the channel markers closely or you'll hit the submerged rocks...

I am assuming the launch is on the Pontchartrain side of Manchac.
Does any one have the name of this launch?
Thanks

The only Pass Manchac launches I know of are along the old highway (51?), next to I-55. I don't think there is a launch at the east end of the pass, but I could be wrong.
The public launch in Madisonville is at the mouth of the Tchefuncte River (west side) at Lake Ponchartrain. It's at the very south end of Lake Rd (Hwy 1077).
There's also a small public launch on Hwy 22 next to the Madisonville Bridge (east side of bridge, north side of highway). There's not much parking and the ramp is kind of suspect. You can also pay to launch at Marina Del Rey (east of bridge, south side of highway).
