Cinderblocks or some other cheap anchor, I like old Christmas trees. Mark them on GPS.

They sell kits...or you can rig you up some out of PVC, or you can make your own brush piles out of trees and brush if you have that available.
people like the kits and PVC because not alot of ways for your hooks to get hung up on trees limbs and braches. They also will last longer than real brush and can be moved around to more productive areas.

You can use bamboo too. Here's a pic with some cemented in a 5 gal bucket. PVC won't show up on sonar. You can mark it on GPS and others won't find/fish it. It outlasts bamboo, wood, and especially christmas trees.

My bro-in-law has a house on Toledo Bend and his pier goes out to at least 13-14ft deep. I am not knowledgeable about sac a lait but told him we should either sink trees or PVC. Have you ever heard of drilling holes in PVC and filling it with dog food? If so is that a good idea?

Some bodies of water have restrictions on sinking structure. Some dont allow it at all, some only allow natural products, and some dont care.
Make sure what ever you sink will stay sunk. If a piece of your structure floats up and they can prove it was yours placed illegally you will get in trouble if it causes a boating accident.
PVC does not show up on sonar unless you cap it so there is air trapped in the pipes.
You can get cheap biodegradable buckets to pour concrete in and mount your limbs at KFC.
Some impoundments will not want you to use bamboo (or other specific live plants) as pieces that break off can and will re-root easily. Check with WLF.
If putting a christmas tree in a concrete bucket, make sure to put some nails half sunk in the trunk so that it will not pull out of the concrete as easily when the tree startes to rot a little.
On lake Conroe they use 1" rebar and drill holes in the base of the trunks of the christmas trees and string them on like a necklace and then bend the ends of the rebar. It works pretty well.

Dog food will attract cat fish if that is what you are going for.

Punch a bunch of holes in a some cans of corn. Tie them to the pier and let them sink. When you're ready to fish, shake them a few times to chum the water. We used to do that.
For the brush piles I use Christmas trees. I got about 15 of them in my back yard ready to bring to the camp. I drill a hole in the trunks and tie them together with some cinder blocks and sink them near our pier so I remember where they are.
I am interested in the PVC piles. If anybody has some websites or pics, post them please.

If you want a good fish attractor head to your local feed store and get a brick of cottonseed cake. Sink it in a burlap bag (which is usually provided with it) and tie it off to a tree or some structure close by so you can retrieve the bag after it is all dissolved.
