When I was young, I caught a 3 foot barracuda on a hook and line only. I had some locals (bahamas) teach me how to fish like they do - no rod or reel, only hook, line, and bait.
Still one of the wildest fights I've ever had.

wouldn't call it Cool, but def unexpected - After hurricane Gustav, my buddies gf caught a croaker in Lake Fausse Point.

Bought a fly rod while working in MO and caught a few of these little wild rainbows in a stream. The only stream in the area with wild trout.

I caught a spoonbill catfish on a jug line on Old River.

Caught a Manta Ray at the Jetties that we estimated was well over 100 lbs.
