Good morning OB question....

I recently bought a home near mine which was formerly occupied by people who really trashed up the place.

I have removed all of the flooring down to the slab however the slab is still discolored and foul smelling. I am in WAY over my head with how to clean the slab, I know I want to put the elbow grease in myself to get it clean but not sure the best method.

Anyone ever dealt with this and have any tips on the best way to remove glue from the flooring, urine and other stuff stained into the concrete slab?

Some sort of acid wash? Something else? Diamond wheel to the slab? a thin layer of concrete on top? Any insight helpful, TIA

I’d hit it with straight bleach first. Any stains that are coming out will be put after that. That should take care of any odors too.

As for the glue, I think a sharp scraper is your best bet. If you’re making a rent house, I would bleach it and cover it with cheap carpet. Change carpet as needed in the future.

For tough stains use Muriatic acid.

To really get it clean, you will need something like the steam cleaner services use where the "wash" is performed and IMMEDIATELY followed by a vacuum that pulls the dirty liquid away, otherwise that dirty liquid goes right back onto the concrete. I realized this during flood recovery, trying to clean grout.

Honestly your best bet is to seal the concrete before putting down new flooring. You probably will never truly get all the urine odor removed from the concrete, or neutralized, but the sealing will stop the odors from escaping the slab.

Muriatic acid is not a great choice for cleaning indoors and best left for outdoor slab cleaning.

It also needs to diluted a good bit and not used in full concentration.

My stepdad had some in his woodworking shop many years ago and he dropped the gallon plastic container that split open spilling the acid on the concrete shop floor. It was nothing short of nasty in there and a lot of his tools near the spill got surface rust overnight from it.

I paid a company to come in and clean the floors in a house we were flipping.. the machine looked like the pressure washer that you use on the driveway. But it vacuums up the water as it goes.. I thought I was gonna have to RIP the tile out but the grout looked new when they finished.. 1200 sf for 500 bucks

They make flat scrapers for glue. I usually put this gel called glue stripper, or aircraft stripper at auto parts stores, on first, and scrape after that.

You can try bleach or TSP with a stiff brush. Don't use muriatic acid inside. You'll just burn your lungs. Also, open the windows if you use bleach.

Chances are that the urine soaked into the concrete. Maybe try cat litter for a few days. If that doesn't work, I'd probably skim over the top of it with a new layer or sealer.

You could also call companies like ServPro and get quotes on a cleaning. They might be able to clean it

My fear of sealing the slab without cleaning is that if it doesn't seal it all the way or something doesnt work I won't know until I get new flooring down and then I'm screwed. Does that line of thinking make sense?

So my thoughts are to try and clean first then seal and hope for the best what a mess this place is!! Thanks for all the help!
