Whats the best bait for catfish jugging? I have heard to use cut up bream but I dont have time to go fishing for them. Whats the best thing I can buy in the store before I go? Some type of steak or something that will stay on the hook good. Thanks for any advice.
Baby Buffalo carp....expensive, 50 cents a piece, but they stay alive forever and they furnish. We caught 900ish lbs of cats on 15 lines in two days using them...!!!!!

Panty hose work, but the salmon eggs spawn sacks work 100x better, mostly because they come precut into 3"x3" squares and all you do is tie off one end with some of the stretchy string. Will hold a liver together in the water forever and possibly through one or two catfish.

Where do you get them? Most catfish I ever caught was a yo yo trip where we baited with those things. Catfish must just hate them.

There's a bait shop in Lettsworth that sells them.

quote:Yes, they are. Now goldfish and carp/buffalo, they're not the same. In fact red/orange goldfish are terrible. I won't use them.

I thought is was illegal to use goldfish.

Figured that may come up. I know of a case where a warden actually made some men kill them before putting them on a hook. Obviously defeats the purpose of paying for live bait.
I say that to share that there is a lot of confusion on this matter. I'll leave it at this, I know places that sell them and they're used REGULARLY as live bait.

On a typical lake, how deep do you have your bait under a jug?

Best bang for my buck has always been shad if they were running. When not, hot dogs produced very good results as well.

Most people don't realize just how much catfish are surface feeders too. We used to set lines in White Lake that were a string 2 feet out of the water with a leader every 6 ft. We'd catch big ones in water so shallow we had to walk to bait lines on the end tied to the bank.

So if you were in about 7 feet of water, your line would be about 2 1/2 feet below the jug? I'm looking at running some jugs during the day around my cove at Lake Livingston this weekend.
I have the most success from 7 o'clock until dark with night crawlers on a bobber from my dock. Just looking to change it up a little. Last time I caught about 10 large cats during that time period, one after another.

I use those noodles and cut a piece of PVC to run through them so I can put a reflective tape around the end. Without reflective tape, I had an unbelievably hard time finding them in the dark- with a Q beam.

FYI, from fishingnoodles.com
In Texas – Jug Fishing – Legal, butmust be white. Wrap the noodles with white duct tape to comply.

Got the white tape ready to go. I plan on using live shad about two feet under the jug. Blackened catfish is the goal for Memorial Day.
