Camp Advice

Want advice on the best parish to get a camp. Currently live in South LA and prefer fishing to hunting. Wanting a spot that is remote but not remote enough that you can't get essentials from town. What's the consensus on the best boating/fishing area to buy or build a little camp in the area? Any advice is appreciated

Wouldn’t you be happier fishing in TN?

Thank you. That pretty much validates everything I have heard

I have a home/camp on Bayou Terrebonne where I spend about half my time and all of those are solid locations.
Here is my only additional input. Get inside the Morganza to Gulf Hurricane Levee. And you can get more protection by being on higher ground with trees around (not right next to camp obviously), other homes/camps adjacent to you. Other structures/woods break the hurricane winds a bit. Check with insurance company before you buy to see if they will even insure it, and what premiums. Louisiana Citizens may be the only company, depending on location.
Some camps stick out like sore thumb for a hurricane with nothing else around and farther south. Several years ago I bought a house that was built in 1938 and very solid. 1/2” plywood on all exterior and interior walls under the wallboard and a heavy gauge metal roof. Rode thru Ida fine including eye wall.
Being inside the levee and a bit farther north may make a little farther run to fish in the summer time, but IMO it’s worth it. This past weekend we had a nice speck trip on Thursday, caught 10 lb shrimp Friday and a mess of crabs.

Depends on type of fishing you are looking for. Presumably its salt water.
If that is the case, the LaFrance community south of Pearlington, MS (on the East Pearl River) gives great access to the Louisiana Marsh from the Cat Island area all the way back into Rigoletes. Fishing is best, but there are local areas to duck hunt as well on both the Louisiana and Mississippi side (which can be helpful during a long duck split). The community is "remote" but you can be in Bay St. Louis in 20-25 minutes or can be at the local grocery/gas station in about 10 minutes.
Another great on is the Lake Catherine Area, although it is overcrowded and the prices there are more extreme. Also doesnt help that DOTD keeps closing the bridges.
I have always loved Empire/Grand Bayou area. Close enough to civilization that if something goes wrong you can get home - but also remote enough with plenty of Marsh. Only down side is hunting is not as good.
All around a camp really needs to be somewhere either 1) its close and convenient for you and family to go often (think GI or Lake Catherine) or 2) you have a wife that doesn't care that you go off 3-4 hours every other weekend for multiple days while she stays at home (think Venice).
Tl;Dr: where are you located? How far do you want to drive? How much does your wife care about you being gone?

Wow, thank you! This is great information. That info on the levee location is great insight!
