Inside coil has a leak and the condensing unit outside froze up along with the interior coil. A/C guy says the leak will only get bigger and said they would install an aluminum coil(his reason was that aluminum was better than copper-im not an expert but I disagreed-especially for the price). Quoted $2800 to replace just the coil. This is on a Carrier 5 ton unit.

Is this a fair price?

How much would a new 5 ton system(middle grade) system cost? $5k?

TIA

Not an a/c guy, know less than nothing about them.
Was told by multiple a/c guys you can't fix al. coils, you can fix cu.
We just got a price to change out a tight 2 1/2 ton gas furnace for around that I think.
I'd get other prices if you have the time.

that is clearly a ripoff.

Not sure how Aluminum is "better" unless it costs less to manufacture. Copper clearly is a better heat conductor.

Way cheaper than copper. Cu is expensive as frick these days. Aluminum is a good enough heat conductor for the job.

$2800 just to change a coil seems a little excessive.

DO NOT GO WITH THE ALUM COILS!

He is trying to stick it to you. As said before copper can be repaired and I bet yours can be repaired. If it's not rotten I would repair it.

How old is your unit?

Formicary corrosion is the reason he is suggesting the aluminum coil. Most companies are doing this. The price is a little high. Should run you around $1500 but not knowing your exact situation....I suggest you get three bids.

5 ton A coils cost $400 max. Most are around $300. Look it up online. There's a guy on Craigslist in Hammond selling new coils for like $150.

Labor to swap out and recharge the system shouldn't be any more than $250 and this includes freon ni matter if its R22 or R410A.

Yes, R22. 5yr warranty

Looks like the newer systems have 10 year warranties.

I'm on northshore. I'm ok paying for someone to make a profit if they are licensed and insured. I want to make sure they warranty their work and they are legit. But I'm not gonna get taken either.

This guy just called back and dropped the price $300.

Thanks for all the help.

You have a good understanding of business. A coil may cost $400.00 but it is a half day job usually requiring 2 people...they will also replace your safety pan and float switch. Freon 22 has gone through the roof(around $400.00 for 30#)...410A has dropped to around $60.00 for 25#. You add to that a warranty an the general expenses of operating a business and you will see $1500. is proper.

Your HVAC company is playing a very old game of giving you a price in hopes of you taking it...after a couple of days you call back and lower your price...I know of companies that will lower the price 4 times.

Good luck with everything

False. Still around $275 a can
Last year it was an even 2 hunned. I wouldn't exactly call that through the roof.
Acme refrigeration here in BR has it for $275 if you wanna call em.

No, I trust ya. but still 275 is quite a rise from the 60 we used to pay for a drum...now that I would call through the roof.
