I was at the range the other day and shot my buddy's AR with a .22 upper. Needless to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Should I buy a S&W 15-22 or just buy a .22 upper to slap on the AR I already own? They're roughly the same price (~$400). I know in the past there have been some obscene 15-22 deals posted but I can't seem to find anything for less than $390 at the moment. WWTOBD?

I would just do the upper. Then you can get better at the trigger pull of the lower.

I have a 15-22, and I freaking love it. No experience with a dedicated 22 upper, though.

I changed my mind. Get both. But if only one, get the dedicated. Customize it different.

Thanks guys. Anybody seen a deal lately on the 15-22? Like I said in the OP I know I can do better than $389 plus shipping and FFL.

If you can wait it out a bit, grabagun.com does a $360-$370 special on them every once and a while.

if you can deal with their slow shipping times, Palmettostatearmory.com usually has good quality conversion kits and dedicated uppers. go that route so you don't have to mess w/ FFL & a 4473.

and don't customize it differently than your normal setup. the whole point is to train with what you're going to be using when needed the most. familiarity is key.

Excellent point, and the same one my shooting buddy stressed to me when we had this conversation this weekend.
