I never attempted to train my lab, but a few years ago I stuck a deer behind my house went and got him just to see what he'd to. As soon as we hit the blood trail he took off and went right to the deer. Since then he's found about 10 deer including a big 9 pt I thought I missed last year. Dogs be smart.

Other breeds to consider:
Black Mouth Cur
Mountain Cur
Coonhound
Ridgeback
Vizla (all purpose)
Lots of personality there

at one time would blood trail 5-8 deer a weekend
You must not have hunted with people from the Outdoor Board. Because when posters here shoot a deer, it falls dead immediately.

I'd suggest going to the range and learning how to shoot better
