I've been trying to get in touch with LDWF all day, but have had no luck, so hopefully the OB can provide some answers.

I am getting a boat from a family member. It's an older family member who can no longer use or take care of the boat, so he is basically giving it to me. The boat/motor is a mid-90s model. We believe all he has is a registration on the boat and title on the trailer.

What will I need to have and what will I need to get in order to have the boat transferred to me? I know we will need to have some kind of bill of sale or act of donation, but other than that, I'm not sure. Will I need to title the boat/motor?

Just have him sign the back of the title/titles. Take the old title to the DMV, pay the fees and apply for a new title.

Well that would take care of the trailer, but not the boat, unless I'm confused about who deals with what. LDWF deals with the boats, and I've been told conflicting information regarding boat titlee, registration, what I need, etc.

Do a bill of sale on the boat/motor. Have that notorized. There is a form you need to download from LDWF for transferring boat registration. Basically you fill out the form and mail it in with a copy of the bill of sale. They will send you in the mail a new registration sticker with a card with the new owner on it. I just did it less than a year ago. You can go online and get the form needed but if you call they can walk you through any questions you have and can explain exactly what form you need. I forgot exactly how I got it but I talked to them and went from there.

There may be a spot on the back of the registration to sign depends on year.

You need one notarized bill of sale for the boat/motor. Print the bill of sale form from LDWF. It has one confusing part that says something like "before me __________ came and appeared" and you need both of your names there.

If it has not been previously titled it does not have to be.

The new application also has a notary signature line I think.

Also, a separate BOS for the trailer along with the signed over title. You pay tax on the trailer only.
